Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a problem I am having with my 2001 k-series, petrol engine. I only brought this car recently for pretty cheap and it had the HGF classically associated with this engine type, so I decide to set about replacing the gasket, whilst replacing this I also changed the water pump, thermostat and cam belt as well as the inlet manifold gasket.

The freelander has been working well before the change (apart from overheating due to HGF) there have been no misfires or anything unusual. However after I put the engine back together and took it for a small drive it developed an issue where it is misfiring and not starting properly, now it struggles to start and needs some gas to get going and then eventually it will just cut out again. I am guessing that it is something I have moved or a dodgy connection that is causing the problem.

I have plugged it into a fault finder machine which has returned the following fault codes -

PO340 - Camshaft position sensor "A" circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor Malfunction)

P0300 - Random / Multiple cylinder misfire detected.

P0313 - Misfire detected with low fuel.

I am guessing the last two fault codes are related to the first, I have put some more fuel in the tank to see if maybe there would be some sort of resolution, however I am also not sure if the system is pressurising properly. Any help would be much appreciated, maybe someone has seen a similar problem after replacing the head gasket??
Thanks.

First off it is polite to introduce yourself to the forum in the new members section ;)

The P0300 and P0313 will most likely be fuel related. Does the fuel pump prime for approximately 2 seconds when the ignition is turned on?
The Cam position sensor will normally stop the engine from restarting if it fails while the engine is running.
It sounds like you could do with checking all wires and hoses again just to make sure everything is where it should be.
Did you replace the cylinder head? If not there is a good chance the gasket will last no time at all. This is because the head uses heat treated alloy, an overheat softens the head so the fire rings let go in a very short time.
Good luck with it.

There's a big connector block under the throttle body, if you follow the cable from the camshaft sensor past the bracket at the end of the engine to under the throttle body you'll find it . Take it apart and clean the pins etc and then reconnect it this will probably cure the problem. I had exactly the same errors after doing my head gasket this cured it. The last error on mine seemed erroneous as I had 3/4 of a tank of petrol. Mine would start easily and run ok but it still threw up these codes a few times before they disappeared when I cleaned this block connector. :)
