Hi Friends,
Here in Jamaica there is nothing "Free" about Freelanders (parts are expensive).Monopoly dealership you see.
Mine is a 2003.TD4 with 86000 miles of rough road on it.So far have changed MAF,fuel pump and filter two window winder assemblies,engine mount,two injectors,inlet rubber hoses.alternator (power steering hose leaked on it)
I am having a cold start problem, once she is hot she starts pronto, but when cold turns she takes about 12 turns to fire.I understand that due to the quality of our diesel here (higher than normal sulphur content)my problem could be due to premature engine wear in the block.Don't know what to do.There are no recalls here in JA.How do I check for premature engine wear and what can be done about it?
A frustrated earlieb!!
P>S> At top speed i get about 85-90mph.

I would take a look at the simple things first. Have somebody check the colour of the exhaust smoke whilst you try to start the engine when it is cold. White smoke tends to indicate a glow plug problem: No smoke at all would suggest that fuel is not arriving at the cylinders until the engine has been cranked for some time and I would then check that there is sufficient low pressure fuel arriving at the high pressure pump. Take a look at these items first then reassess the situation. Cheers Dann..

Titter , well least you didnt get all shirty Earlobe UN welcome to the daftest forum on the web. . . . .if you go into search there is a lot of help on there but you have to trawl through the banter. . . .your problem sounds two fold 1 could be one glow plug u/s or 2 could be low fuel pressure [fuel pumps or just the filter blocked] try thr simple wun first :) :) :) un best oh luck, if it dunt werk then get back to us:) :)

Barbados is'nt bad. But you know Jamaica is the Creme de la creme the only thing we dont have are competitive dealers. Ming!!!!! what about the premature engine wear? Do you think I need to Decarb the engine to get the type of performance I used to get?
Is there a place or places which can recondition STC 4555 injectors?

A few things to try:

Add injector cleaning additive to the fuel regularly

Bypass the EGR valve and clean out the inlet manifold

Replace the 'Crankcase depression limiting valve and filter'

Consider removing the Catalytic converter internals to help the turbo achieve full boost

All these procedures are well covered in the forum archives. Dann..

Yup Earlobe. . . . .Pretty much the same as Dan the man sez. . . . .but have you tried disconnecting the maff, if not try it , if when disconnected it go's like er rockit, then the maff is outer spec [its an easy test] written about on this forum . . . .if yer carnt get injector cleaner just slap a litre of vedg oil in the tank when you fill up [do it on a regular basis an its as good as anyfink yer can buy] un best er luck Jamaican Earthling :) :) :)
