i got a freelander 1.8 xi about three months ago realy nice car paid 5.500 for it on a( v ) plate its got 72000 on the clock so i rang around for a price to have the cam belt changed and a majour service and had a quote of £200 from a place that has a very good rep
when he had a look at it he said he wont do it because the head gasket has gone and he has made it a pollicy not to touch the heads on freelander because he cant garante the work
and he said that i would find it hard to find some one who will do it unless i supply a non poruss head

Try posting on the hairdr.......... oops I mean Freelander bit further down.

Theres only Fredlander looks up here. And thats 'cos he's a closet mans vehicle owner, and hasn't come out yet.

that cos of all the mis directed anger from the girls down there.. they are really angry at themselves for having bought a gaylander. ..................................... you can't even get a decent headjob with them!!!!

Steady on slob, poo pooing the cars is ok, but leave the womens shortcomings out of it.

Hiya, i also have a freelander xi v reg, and im using loads of water and have cream coloured foam coming fron the oil inlet, im told this is the headgasket,. I woulid appreciate any feed back / advise you have recieved ? . (TA) DAVE WILKS.

no yer head gasket is a metally things with holes in it.; what you got there is a mix of water and oil this happens when yer head gasket is stuffed. allowing the water and oil to comtaminate each other. the other name foe it is emulshun but i can't spell that.

Hi Dave,
I had the same problem, I initially intended to have the head gasket replaced by a local mechanic, however the job was much bigger than first thought and the cylinder head had to be replaced as this was warped or porous or something, can't remember which one. All in it cost me £673 but you have to do it otherwise it ruins the radiator and heater and aircon with all the oil, and that would have been really expensive.

:) Rog :)

That is the head gasket mate, mine blew and twisted the head i had to have a collar fitted to it, cost me £1100, the bloke who repaired it said 1 in 3 go, so i now own a disco. My bosses Y plate has just gone too.

If the world was full of freelander drivers we'd all be trying to UN-invent the wheel

no - if the world woz full of freelander drivers - it mite have been designed rite in the fookin first place!

oh for a real lr

Where do I start???

Firstly, dont panic - everyone who suffers a HGF does!!

Its a very simple process to put right and does not always cost a lot to solve.

In fact I recently bought a Freelander with a failed gasket (no compression and no water left in rad or pipes) as a summer project.

I bought the latest head gasket, oil rail, inlet and exhaust gaskets, steel dowels, new thermostat, timing belt, sump gasket, coolant elbow gasket etc for a total sum of £173. (all from LR dealer)

Whipped the head off the engine (whilst in car) and could have put right there and then. I like to do a proper job, and after asking some chaps on here decided to take the stripped engine out and completely clean and refurb outside the vehicle.

Helpful advice allowed the engine to come out seperately (Haynes advise taking gearbox out at same time).

Sunday the engine was lowered back in and a few ancillaries connected. Yesterday I connected everything else, added oil and turned the key - running perfectly :D

Im no mechanic!! In fact im a teacher (who is fortunate to have 6 weeks to tinker with the freelander). If you feel confident, buy a Haynes manual and repair yourself.

Back in '99 I had a HGF on an aging Rover 214. I ended up buying an engine from a breakers yard and fitting when I may have been able to rebuild.

In 2004 I changed a failed head gasket on my sisters only 8v K series metro. - This was done in one day and I had a late start.

I have never seen a cylinder head that could not be refitted.

Regards,

Steve

Good on yu Steve:)
I too have done several HG's in my time, but for some reason, all my local LR peeps say "no can do" - Liners move and Engine Knac****! - New engine mate at £1900:eek:. Personally I cant see wot the problem is - Wet liners have been common for donkeys yonks - maybe LR arent training REAL automotive engineers now (that'l create a storm) just "part replacers".

yule find most garages only have 'fitters' worker in them these days.. **** i can't even get anycunt to adjust the steering on me jag... its all "ooooooo! its too complicated" ffs its only a steering rack with TRE's on it.. then there is the 'you was susposed to have fixed it so am gonna sue yer arse attitude '
which puts a lot of garages off

Try k-seal have a look at my site http://www.ksealit.com see the testimonials we have had reports of it fixing this and with 100 000 bottles sold in UK it has got to work more often than not.
Even landrover world mag used it and rated it said all claims proved to be justified!!!
