Freelander gearbox goes for the second time in & months

In April my Freelander developed a vibration at about 60kph it had done 112000kms a 2000 1.8 diesel with 5 speed box.
Then on a trip it got worse. a clicking sound devloped which got louder and louder until clanging and banging brought us to a halt.
Towed back to out friendly garage and they replaced the gear box with a recon job as well as the bit on the rear drive shaft 3500 euros and new tyres on the back all seemed well.
Last week the same thing happened again after about 6000kms apparently the back tyres are wrecked again.
Looks like another recon box, the mechanic suggests leaving the rear shaft off.
ANYBODY have the same problem, is this a FREELANDER problem ??

you feelin ok BoB, you didn't say burn it.

If it's trashing rear tyres the VCU is probably too tight or seized..........ultimately it also causes transmission failures..

hence the garages suggestion to leave the rear prop off, if the logic follows

how do you loosen the VCU ??

It is new from the last failure

You can't alter the VCU.

So it raises more questions,

is the vc actually new?

was the replacement ird the correct ratio? the version for the V6 is different.

IRD I will check with the mechanic, as far as I know the VCU was brand new thanks Bob

Rear diff?

take the cover plate off the rear diff and look inside it.

rear tyres shot , = vcu problem

possible solution is to remove the prop shaft and go front wheel drive only

The transmissions winding up for sure. Reasons are well known as:

IRD ratio wrong (Wrong IRD fitted at alst replacement);
VCU siezed (Do tipex test as a minimum);
Larger diameter tyres on the front compared to the rear;

If the read diff was shot then there would be vibration and noise to go along with it.
