Freelander fuel cap

Having 'lost' part of the top of the fuel filter I have bought a replacement and am not sure how to remove the lock frrom the old cap and fix it in the new one - anyone achieved this who can help? LR dealer implied that the only solution was a new lock (and thus extra keys which I need like a hole in the head!)
