Freelander fan issue

As DD said it should be ok while you are moving. The bottom rad hose on my v6 doesn't get above 25ºC on my 8 mile commute. If you hit traffic just put the heater on max hot, this should pull enough heat out of the engine to keep the temp lowish ;)

Thanks Nodge and Diesel for your comments.

The next step im gonna take is to put all the wiring back as it was then, run the car up and check the temp is definitely high enough for the fans to kick in.
Then im gonna try a new coolant temp sensor and a cooling fan relay module box and an air con relay just to make sure i havent fried anything.

if that still doesnt work then i suppose its maybe a new ecu ?

Im gonna get the air con re gassed so that ive got those fans to switch to if i get worried..

Any advice on the best place to get that done ?

Thanks again.

Ok I've changed the coolant fan relay module, and the coolant temp sensor and the relay in the fuse box but still no fans kicking in, I've got the updated expansion tank an have checked temperature with a lazer thermometer and the fans still aren't cutting in.
There's a guy on eBay selling an ecu with a fob, he reckons it should just plug n play or if not just a simple plug in with a scanner to programme it.
It looks like that's my next thing to try.
I don't know what else to do.

What did you point the thermometer at? The bottom rad hose will read over 100ºC before the fan comes in. It's 106º for the v6! But the 4 pot is around 100ºC.

I've just done a HG on a 2001 freelander and ran it up to temperature until fans kicked in once id completed the job.
I do exactly the same on mine and they're not kicking in. I'm definitely letting it get hot enough, i don't want to be spending all this money for no reason, I don't know what else to do other than change the ecu. I want it working properly, I don't want one of these bodge up sensors or switches put in instead.

Will the ecu just plug and play if I get the programmed fob with it , or will it need to be plugged in ?

You need to replace the roof rack, sun roof and tailgate window. ;)

What they said above.

Your Freelander switches on the fans if it detects it's hot. It detects the temperature by taking a measurement from the temperature circuit. You need to know what measurement the car is reading. You need to know if the car is detecting it's hot. The way to do this is to monitor the obdii reading of the coolant temperature, via the odbii electrical port under the glove box. This reading is what the cars computer uises to know if it's hot, and switches on the fans if it see's the temperature value reads hot. If the temp reading is always 22 degrees then its wrong. If it's -1200 degrees then it's wrong. If it slowly increases as the engine warms up then this is a good sign. If it doesn't get hot enough for the car to want to put the fans on then it won't put the fans on. What is the odbii temperature?

Hey Seasider, did you replace the sensor by the thermostat or bottom rad hose? Im having trouble finding the sensor on the rad hose, my cars giving giving me the P1117
