There's an ecu fault on my freelander which doesn't tell the fans to cut in when they should.
On defenders they sometimes replace the viscous fan for an electric fan which runs off a temp sender/fan switch to tell it to turn on when needed.
Well anyway I've used one if these switches to work with my fans but ice ran into a problem. Once the system got up to the correct temp the fans cut in but they never cut out again. Even if I go to my freelander in the morning and connect the fan switch up the fans are automatically running.

I must add that I've got a 2002 freelander with a different lump in it from (I'm not sure what year.
Before I added this temp sender/fan switch to the system the fans would only work if I unplugged the coolant temp sensor. Also the temp gauge is working fine.
But I must add that the sensor that is below the coolant temp sensor is unplugged and the plug and wire has been cut off and I don't know why.
Can't anyone shed any light please please please

I really want to drive my car but I can't because of this problem.
 
Why don't you get one of those after market temp sensors that you connect directly to your cooling system
They go onto one of your cooling system hoses and you can get a switch that you can set to a specific temperature and adjust

My brother in law just fitted one to the kit car he is building
No idea how much but I can find out when he gets of nights

First off how do you know the ecu isn't running the fans? If you unplug the temperature sensor and the fan runs the ecu is working. Have you measured the engine temperature using the obd2 port live data? I can't remember the fan on temperature but it's near 100º. It's common for the cooling fans to never run during the winter as the radiator is well oversized for the 1.8 engine, in fact the same rad is used in the 2.5 v6 which requires twice the cooling capacity of the 1.8 and even then the fans hardly ever run in normal road us.
Secondly if your engine has an extra temperature sensor then it's likely it's an early MEMS 1.9 engine which used 1 sensor for the ecu and a separate 1 for temperature gaug.
 
What nodge said is true, personally I'd make sure you've got the correct temp sender cos it sounds like the engines just been chucked in! Then check the readings from it cos the fans only work when they're flippin hot, if you disconnect it and it puts the fan on then that really means you've tested everything apart from the sensor!
 
I have a L series Freelander and never had the fans come on which sensor ( location) on mine would i need to disconnect to test the fans do kick in

when my boss plugs in my car it says theres an ecu fault, and the guys i bought the car off said there was and gave me the cooling switch/sensor to fit into the bottom rad pipe..
Also id like to think that i wasnt letting the car get hot enough for the fans to cut in but when ive worked on freelanders in the past when weve done hg, i always run the car and bleed the cooling system until i hear the fans kick in.

By the way im an apprentice mechanic, im good at fitting parts but diagnosing any problems just like this is way over my head.
My next plan was to buy a new cooling fan relay module

and a cooling temp sensor to see if that fixes it..
My boss takes the **** out of me for buying a freelander, especially as ive had a rover 200 that died on me, but i absolutely love the freelander ive bought i just need to get to the bottom of this issue.

what about the relay module ?
its definitely got on of them because i got the part number off it, so i could find one on ebay ?

If my boss actually had the time to look properly into whats up with my car then im sure he could get to the bottom of it, but hes always too busy, thats why im asking guys that know the ins and outs of freelanders.
 
also, my air con doesnt work. When i press the button the light doesnt come on, ive checked the fuse which seems to be fine.

Could this be related in any way ?

The AC light should light up even if the AC system is down on gas pressure.
The best way to get a Freelander up to fan temp is hold the revs at 2,000 rpm with the car stationery, you'll never get the fans on by driving it as the air going through the front grill cools the rad more than the fans ;)
Monitor the live data, the fans should come in around 100º or so.

So do you think im ok to drive the car even if the fans arent kicking in ?
The last thing i wanna do is cook my hg,
i have held the revs at 2000 rpm with the car stationary but they just never kicked in.
Also do you think that the aircon not coming on could be a problem ?
because ive been told that as soon as you hit the ac button the fans automatically come on, so if my ac was working i could just do that every so often to keep bringing the temp down.
 
I've had to put a blanket over my grill before to get the fan to cut in! Don't they teach you anything on apprenticeships anymore? You should plug some gauges onto the valves to see what pressures in it! Or you can take it out, weigh it and put it back in again! Light will work with no gas but compressor won't kick in and fans won't come on.
 
You can plug a cheap eobd code reader in to read the engine temp from that you should be able to see if its hot enough to be bringing the fan on! But if you've got the wrong sensor fitted the reading may well be wrong!!!

ive got a coolent temp sensor and directly underneath that theres another sensor but theres nothing plugged into it. someone told me that the one underneath is the sensor to tell the gauge what the temp is but my temp gauge is working fine without anything being plugged into that one..
The annoying thing is i dont know what year lump has been put back into my freelander so i wont know if its the right temp sensor or not.
