Hi everyone,

I have had a 2004 TD4 freelander for a couple of months now. Had it serviced when I bought it.

I have noticed a couple of times on starting from cold that If I start it and do not rev it up it seems fine, I just rev it enough to get it moving and have no problems.

However if I start it up and let it idle for say 5 - 10 seconds and then rev the engine up a bit it sounds like it is missing and I get a big cloud of white / greyish smoke from the Exhaust. If I then pull away as normal it seems fine.

When I pull away and accelerate up to second gear It does not miss or give off any smoke, nor does it seem to smoke at all or miss while going through the other gears when the engine is cold.

Is this just normal or could there be an issue with say the Glow Plugs or something.

I also notice the engine sometimes sounds like it is pinking like the old petrol engines used to. Only get this sound though if the drivers window is down, going through the low gears and driving along side something that is bouncing the sound back.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated as I am taking the motor on a trip around Scotland in a few weeks time and don't want to be running into problems.

Thanks

sounds like one glow plug is u/s. . . .quite common i drove er doozle fer three years wiff one glow plug u/s ,it would pour out white smoke every time i started it ,but it would start every time even in frosty mornings. . . .:)

Hi Ming, thanks for your reply. So would you say to get the glow plugs looked at or not?

I have to say mine always starts first turn of the key every time.

um yes. . . .as er rule er thumb if one go's then its best ta replace the lot, if your into car fixin then its a faily easy job to find out if one is u/s they all have a basic resistance in ohms and should be about the same value the faulty one always go open circuit. . .but you have to dissconect the common buzz rail to measure each one via earth or neg to prove it , so a decent ohm meter dissconect battery poss to be safe, un blobs yer blungle, spay wiff penatration fer a few hours before removal , un a good tip ,anti seize on freds of new uns ,job done. . . . .:)
