I've been told that there was a problem with the gearbox in our Freelander where it made graunching noises going into first or reverse.
This issue happened while some learner drivers in the family were driving the vehicle. However, the person teaching them then tried driving and the problem continued.

But: Today I took it for a test drive and there was no crunching from the gearbox at all.

I am wondering, then, if it is possible that the gearbox got wound up due to learner drivers not depressing the clutch pedal far enough. Could this have resulted in the crunching noises which continued when an experienced driver took over?

Thanks

It's a 1999 XEDi.

The PG1 box is known to be a bit crunchy especially as the synchro rings wear, this is worse as the oil ages. The clutch operation system can cause problems with gear engagement too, as it often seizes. I'd be looking there first along with a gearbox oil change using the correct MTF94 oil.

2nd above an oil change is always a good idea has cured many a PG1 gearbox problem on many forums
also worth spraying some instant grease /penetrating oil on the clutch arm
