my 2002 freelander is causing a problem...with the engine turned off the water bottle becomes empty, when i start the engine it fills up with red fluid bubbles and steam escapes from the bottle lid, when drivin steam comes out the side of the bonnet from the bottle,no warning lights no overheating,no obvious lack of fluid, could it be a blocked rad,or faulty water pump, the car drives great no power loss,no oil leaks etc, just this bubbling steaming bottle on a live engine.

1.8 gaylander? -head gasket failure

Had the same problem. changed water pump. flushed radiator and bled system still no good. Had to do head gasket in the end. most likely that. got my up-rated head gasket ,head bolts all other gaskets for £45.00 off ebay. works fine now............... untill the next problem occurs hope this helps.

still non the wiser,my 2.5 v6 petrol freelander does not use oil,in fact theres no sludging,no coffee in the water,no white gunge in the oil cap,no white smoke,no loss of power,no overheating, and yet all the mechanics have said its the head gasket, the engine is 4 yrs old and done 22k,all i see is the water bottle emptying when parked, and filling and bubbling when hot, pulling my hair out here please some suggestions

Is a snif test the way forward? Have yer taken the sump tray off to look for leaks?

Without a doubt all is pointing to HGF. my advice dont keep driving it, get it off the road and get it fixed.

You don't always get warning signs, sounds like your riding your luck don't kill the V6, get it off and fixed.

Please spend more than £40 on parts, or your going be doing it all again real soon.

Angus - dont fall into the common trap of jumping on the HGF bandwagon - it is easy to do.

check the thermostat housing - common cause of coolant loss on KV6.
replace coolant bottle and cap (for bottle with coolant level sensor)
then report back.

Fair cop, my own thought was the mention of no water in bottle then water due to pressure, this supports air in system which again supports problems with the head. Without a doubt the beasts overheated at some point so jusr replacing the coolant bottle is a step in the right direction but wont be the answer to the original problem.

No it doesn't. It could, butnot exclusively, the coolant cap and bottle or renowned for cracking/splitting - that would cause massive coolant loss under pressure irrespective of HGF

Anyone got a pic of the LR replacement coolant bottle with the level sensor fitted? Is this something you can buy with the seonsor fitted, or like mine (idea from man hat man's thread) with a home fitted sensor?

Haven't got a pic, will see if anything comes up on google pictures, I'm sure my thread about "Somethings not right" has the part number, I'll have a look......

Anyhow you can buy the complete thing, it's just listed as a Rover part.

Agree - my V6 had similar problems. Turned out to be cracked thermostat case (where it fits into head) - allows air in and water boils. I can send you a pic of the problem I had if it helps. Also - check bottle for hairline cracks or replace. Good luck.
