freelander brakes light on????

Hi My freelander is not working at all. A light has come on the dashboard and it shows the jeep going downhill, it is orange. The car has absolutely no power and I had to revert to manual to get it going! Any ideas what this is.
When I go from automatic to manual do I just change up the gears or do I need to switch it into manual by way of a switch. You've guessed I'm a woman!!!!
The freelander is 5 years old, diesel and automatic.

Please Help

Have you tried turning HDC (Hill desent control) off?:doh:

when you go from auto to manual (by pushing the gear lever over) it will first show sport in the mileage disply. Then push forward to go up a gear, and pull back to go down a gear.

(it won't let you do a shift which would damage either engine or gearbox, or change up to early)
