Freelander 2001 td4 wont start #bloody jinx

Hi again all, well the curse of the freelander has struck again, only 2 days ago I was saying how its the law of the land that if I fix something, something else has to break. Bloody jinx lol
Anyway this is what happened..
Me and my son stopped outside a small tesco, I ran to cashpoint. He always locks the doors from inside to be safe. Usually I get back, tap the window and he unlocks it, BUT in a rush he had locked it and I opened it with the key from outside, the car struggled to start, drove 10ft and died, wouldnt start til the nxt day it just fired up, I drove it home and went to move on drive,died again and will not start. Ive stripped out fuel pump and thats fine but no power going to it(one in tank). Has something knackered up with the door locking? Im totally stuck!
Oh this was because I just brought a new propshaft for it. Bas**rd

I only have a key as car didnt come with the remote locking fob

Can't help much I'm afraid - these TD4 fuel pumps are far to complex for me to understand!

I wouldn't think the problem is connected to the locking/unlocking as that is controlled by the CCU and the fuel pumps are controlled by the engine's ECU. I presume the immobilisation LED is not lit on the dashboard as you managed to drive it home.

I'd think maybe the pump relay if there's no power getting to it or fuel filter if there's power but no start. Some diags might help.

I would think your biggest issue though is finding somewhere to live where you don't have to lock your child in the car when you use an ATM!

Yeah I think ive ballsed something with the locks tbh but il try the relay 2mor.
Just found it strange that it started to.get me home, then dead again. Thanks for help tho

It does not sound like its related to the door unlocking event to me. I would think that if the immobiliser is preventing starting it wouldn't start at all, ever, until resolved. I reckon the timing is a coincidence. I'll bow to the more experienced/knowledgeable folks though if they think otherwise.

The engine management light is lit up yellow, I plugged my cheapo code reader in but says no faults.
I had to walk away from it today othereise id have pushed it in a lake

Is it starting from cold but once warmed up it will not start after being turned off,? or is it not staring at all or will start then just die ? if it starts from cold then will not start after being driven warmed up could be can sensor.

It will not fire up at all

Are you sure it’s the engine management light? Immobiliser symbol is an engine with a lightning strike through it or a car with a key, IIRC.

Can you hear the fuel pump(s) running when you turn the key to position II?

Your model isn’t ODBII compliant, hence the code reader isn’t reading the codes.

Door locking is a coincidence as said. I'd check the basics first, so all the sensor connections, especially the fuel rail sensor.

Its the yellow engine light with an exclamation that is on. Ive checked every connector and all seem ok, I can hear pump under bonnet but not from the one in the tank, its a fairly new unit looking at it checked fuses relays. Its never missed a beat starting or driving,, so im back to been stumped?!

UPDATE

just an update for everyone, turns out it was the high pressure fuel pump at fault, total coincidence with the locking.
New one fitted and even a new one in the tank also while it was been done. Oh and the ex landrover guy who did it has sorted me a key fob, apparently its easy to reprograme them, pushing the button five times way ive read about somewhere before.

Thanks for letting us know I wonder if the key fob was one that was already programed to the car ? I thought the fob had to be programed to the car

It does, or anyone could walk up to the car with any fob and press the buttons 5 times. That wouldn't be particularly safe. I've heard this before so tried it myself with both my V6 and TD4. Neither of those fobs would work with the wrong car. So yes the fob is programmed to each vehicle.

My car never came with a key fob. He had a spare one lying around and programmed it to work my central locking, all I remember was he briefly said some sequence of locking and pressing button on the fob to register it to that car! I will message him and see if I can get him to explain how he did it

please do that will be interesting to find out , like nodge has said as far as I am aware there is only one way to do it . I did program a Toyota once open , close door three time press fob ect but that was on a older car

Spoke to the guy and it turns out that you do some sequence with the fob BUT you also need the software/gizmo that he has to do it, as he's ex land rover and has all of the diagnostics equipment aswell

Yes ive done this on a 2005 rav4 and confirm it works. You do need your working key though. I too wonder if the freelander can do it as i have some spare fobs that I can try.

The CCU needs to be programmed to accept replacement fobs using T4. You can't do it any other way, or the security can't be classified to Cat 1 standards.

Possibly, but I'm not 100% sure on that. It can do the key transponder, so it might well do the fobs too.
