hi,

Hoping someone with better knowledge than me can help with a problem.

My fathers freelander 2 diesel seems to have a charging issue. When driving normally it puts out about 12.3 volts according to a fitted volt meter. When stationary it also puts out the same voltage as well. The battery is relatively new but it seems to be resulting in wipers being sluggish etc.

The only way to get the voltage to rise is when you are stationary and you open a door it then Jumps up to just over 14 volts.

Anyone have a clue as to what's going on.

14v sounds about right when it’s running. 12.3v is very low.
Check your volt meter.
Which door changes it?
 
According to my dad he has also checked it with another volt meter as well as the one that is fitted Inside the vehicle.

Effectively it seems to sit around 12v unless any of the doors open and then it rises to 14v

An auto electrician has looked at it and said it was odd
 
Does the battery terminal voltage go from 12.3v to 14v if you open the tailgate or bonnet?

Are the battery connections tight? Also the alternator connection tight? Be careful when poking around power terminals.
 
Hi, opening the bonnet and tailgate don't seem to affect it. Just the doors.

The connections appear to be as tight as they should be

It's as if something is pulling down the volts when the doors are closed, or at least trigger that effect.

Does it happen when opening any 1 of the 4 doors? If it does it on all 4 doors opening individually then it's a common problem to the system. I know that's obvious to say, but a process of elimination will help us to understand the fault.

I assume the same problem can be created with the engine on tick over and stationary?

does it stay at 14V when the door is then closed? does the red light on the dash work?
sounds to me like it is some how getting excited < correct term, by the door lights. the dash light normally acts to excite ( jump start get 'er going) the alternator
