Freelander 2 auto clunking noise when reversing ?

Hi all new the forum
Got a 2013 freelander 2 auto .. just free my warranty has run out it seems to be falling apart .. anyway the latest problem .. it's just had a new rear diff at 40k ! They serviced Haldex at same time and changed all the tyres ... just awaiting the bill .. I noticed the spring had gone in gear selector when I got it back ( stuck in) but selector still moved ... sought advice told ok to still drive it like that ..

It sat for a couple of days after I'd picked it up ... first time I went to put it into reverse during 3 pt turn there was an awful bang bang bang but still went back as normal .. tried it again when car straightened up fine ... next day reversed ok the first time .. bang bang bang second ... fast forward stormed back to garage .. could they make it do it .. no... fine for a few days then did it again ..

I have since changed the gear selector ( thanks to whoever posted the link to instructions on here piece of cake ... )

It has done it since ... so After a long story .. any ideas what it could be ? Should I be worried .. can't face another huge bill .. losing faith in landrover and wish I'd started with my hi lux which never had a thing wrong with it in 7 yrs I has it ... only went back to landrover again as I loved my previous defender but I now need an automatic .
Any help appreciated but I found you could explain in fairly simple terms I'm not a car person .. I get in and drive ..ps before anyone does ask ..like the mechanic.. I may be female and car ignorant but yes I did take the handbrake off...

What were the symptoms that lead to a new diff being required? Who did the work on the diff and Haldex? Do you know where they got the diff from and what they did to "service" of the Haldex? You could probably buy a top notch Freelander 1 for the price of the work you've just had done - if you can't, then they've dodged the work.

Personally, if I still had any faith in the garage, I'd be leaving the car with them in exchange for a loan car till they experience the fault. Cars should not make "awful bang bang bang" noises, its a good sign it could be unsafe and/or doing serious damage to itself.

It could be a multitude of different problems. I'd do a GG suggested and get it sorted.
Why was the diff changed and did it bang before that was replaced?

Thanks both .. the diff was changed after I took it in for its mot and service and I mentioned it had just started making a noise driving a couple of weeks before ... it sounded as though I was driving with my windows slightly open and the tryres where soft .. I thought I'd just not done tyre pressure right when I topped them up as the machine was dodgy ... very surprised when they said it was such a major job . They said it was there second one in a couple of months they'd had that needed diff replacing , the other had done 55k and was a year older than mine .. And No it didn't bang at all and never had a problem with reverse

Turns out it's a common fault in freelander 2s ? not helped in my case it would seem as a previous garage put the wrong tyre on when I had a puncture ... same name tyre slightly different tread on fronts and backs

My fault should have looked I guess but you pay them to do a job ...

It was my own diff that was sent away to be reconditioned and whilst I don't know exactly what they did to haldex I know it took landrover 3 days to send the bits as they had run out of fluid ! .

They did suggest the front often goes at same time according to the company who recinditioned the diff but turns out its ok and definitely no similar road noise anymore. It doesn't drive the same anymore, feels a harder drive but they did have to replace all the tyres so putting part of it down to that plus as they aren't all terrain type anymore so bound to feel different ..

Funnily enough since I changed the gear selector it hasn't made the clunking noise though to be fair not done a lot of reversing though it has done around 50 miles a day .

Not tried it off road yet ( I use it to chain Harrow and hump things across the fields) nor towed..

Will have another word with garage .. they haven't billed me yet for diff so not sure how much it's going to be ( it's a small rural garage that works on anything with wheels as opposed to a landrover place but plenty of 4x4s)

Like I said first landrover I've had for a while as got sick of having the defenders nicked just hoping I can get faith back in it otherwise it's got to go

The earlier Freelander 2s had very poor rear diffs. I thought they had sorted them out long before 2013.

However, if the tyres are mismatched, then all bets are off I suppose.

The banging in reverse can be caused by the Haldex - remove the fuse for it and see if it still does it

Thanks td4van the only problem with doing that is it doesn't do it every time ,in fact it's only done it once since I posted . That's why I guess garage couldn't find anything as I did take it back . It also had its brakes done the week before diff changed .. weird as it seems it only does it in the morning and nothing in any other gear ... just really putting me off it and worried when I'm driving as constantly listening for anything different ... and I need to do a long trip at weekend and towing ..are there any more symptoms of haldex going as they did service it ?
