freelander 2.0 td towing

hi. i know a 2.0 td freelander will tow 2000kg on the flat but what is the weight for towing weight up an incline of about 30/40 deg for about 1/2 mile (boat to and from slipway)

I think you will find the Freelander towing limit of 2000Kg is calculated by Landrover on it's ability to restart on a hill, It's also the maximum for legally towning on the road.
If you ask Landrover they have a calculation for setting a vehicles towing limit IIRC including it's ability to restart on a 30deg slope?

ummmm, i tow alot, usually between a ton and 2 ton, its fine on hills, picks up like nothings on it on the flat, but hill starts are a totally different board game, do these freelanders hav a weak clutch or something, as all you do is toast it on the hill starts.
also i got bogged down in some sand a few months ago and thought i'd atleast spin the wheels, insted the clutch just slipped.

Sounds like yer clutch is fooked...have a search for heavy duty clutch's, theres a recent thread on it, fink its from NorthernIreland type bloke...

Well it looks like Landrover knew they had a problem back in 1999, my 1998 freelander had a new clutch just before I bought it at 120K and I have just fitted a clutch to a 52 plate 1.8 Freelander (1) at 52K

Problem -
CLUTCH SLIP / FAILURE - FRICTION PLATE
The customer complains that the engine speed increases without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed. There may also be a complaint of an unpleasant smell entering the vehicle.
Cause
Deterioration of the clutch plate friction material during arduous usage resulting in clutch slip.
Action
Where a vehicle is used in arduous conditions and a customer complaint of clutch slip is confirmed, replace the clutch friction plate with the new ‘Heavy Duty’ plate now available in limited quantity from Land Rover Parts. For repair procedure, refer to Workshop Manual repair number 33.10.01.
