Hi all, well after 5 yrs without a lannie I went and bought an early free lander with the l series diesel engine today.

Now while she has no rot and is pretty clean for its age it has a slight steering issue.

When driving at any speed the steering wheel feels a bit sloppy and will try to move with bumps and undulations in the road. I checked the pressures and corrected them all as they were left right and Chelsea and this improved it somewhat but it's still there.

Any ideas on what to check next. Don't know if it makes a difference but she is on van/commercial tyres according to the chap I bought it off.

Have you checked the drop link arms?

Are the propshafts fitted? I would be doing the one wheel up test myself. If the VCU has gone stiff. It will affect how the steering feels. Also are all the tyres identical with least worn on the rear? The Freelander is hyper fussy with tyres.
If that proves to be ok, then the tracking is next.

Not yet mate plan on having a look tomorrow. Also as an aside how much of a gap should there be between the rear wheel and the brake drums as they look almost touching

Cheers chaps will have a look at the cu tomorrow. Sorry for all the dull questions but it's my first hippo. I'm going to be changing the tyres soonest as they are a bit janky.

Any ideas on the wheels to brake drums. Just want to make sure this is normal.

Ok then had a quick shufti this morning and the props and vcu are missing. Is it possible to retro fit them or should I leave alone

If you actually want AWD then refit the props and see what else is buggered. If you don't need AWD, then leave it as is. Just remember to tell your insurance company about the modification.
