Oh yes here we go again. My fr1 k series has just blown the HG. After hours of reading very relevent info on this site, (no I don't want to burn it, nor does the missus want to sell it.) (Apart from this the wee truck is perfect) I was wondering wat if I just done away with the thermostat, surly that wud give more circulation and cooler running temp. The heater wudnt be great but its her car so it won't bother me. Or am I being daft.

it would under cool and cost you a fortune in fuel and not give very good performance either.

fit a prt when you fix the head......I did and it's perfect :)

I've just sripped the head of and the liners seem fine (not dropped) so I'm getting the head skimmed, gonna fit the good gasket (mls I think) ?, the upgraded stat + hoses and maybe an ewp. My yoke runs only 1 fan but has a space for another one, wud it be an idea to fit the second fan so that its cooling right across the rad instead of just one side of it.

ewp

get new headbolts with the mls/steel dowels too( and optional uprated oil rail)

liners should be proud by about 3 or 4 thou evenly iirc

you don't have aircon so only have one fan, this is ok (really)

the prt is the important bit imho ;)

Think very carefully about installing an EWP, I should know I was the first to do it on mine and it was a total ballache to get right. Freelaner is right, just stick with good quality MLS, PRT and head bolts for now. The EWP is very cool and does have some distinct advantages but I'd say it's way above what the average K series Hippo needs.

So its a nooooo to an ewp then.

I'm putting a turbo K series in mine which was the plan for a while hence the EWP. But for standard K just make sure the up to date mods are in place and check the coolant level often, the only real threat to a properly sorted K is airlocks and coolant leaks. The don't blow up for ****s and kicks if they're looked after properly - much.

Thanks for the advise guys, I have just completed the replacement, so hopfully that's her sorted for a while.

Hi ive just had gasket skimmed new everything have I wasted £1300 quid? My dad said youl be lucky to get 5000 miles outta her I dont think hes right any feedback would be gratefull

What £1300 for a replacement HG.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:. That's over double what a top job should cost.

If it was done properly and a softened head wasn't simply faced off and refitted, then it should last for a long time. If however it was done by someone who doesn't know what they're doing and used a soft head, then you'll be lucky if it lasts till the next oil change.

it was done professionally dont think my man woulda put soft head in it
Many professionals have been caught out with the unique K series engine. There's so much more to them than simply replacing the head gasket.

You man wasn't afraid to charge double bubble for the repair, was he.?

Hey man good morning too you thankyou for kind advice another question ,what is proper coolant ratio too waster on freelander1 and how do I get rid off an air lock
Kind blessings martin
