Title says it all really.. looking to buy a freelander 1 with the 2ltr L-Series engine, what's everybody's general consensus on this engine? Vehicle in question has done a hefty 200,000 miles as well.

Welcome to lz, :)why did you edit your last post, if yous both work for LR id have thought yous would
know a thing or two?? or get info from your place of work. (sorry just being noisy) ;)
From what ive seen the td4 is a great engine what lets the fl1 down is the vcu, does the one your
looking at have a rear propshaft if not walk away. Put up a link for the vehicle an the team will help
you out. @Hippo knows a fing or 2 about them.

Njoy the forum ;)

Thanks for your reply! I work for Main dealer so can safely say we dont see many 20 year old vehicles when we are charging best part of £200 an hour for labour :DI have heard good things about the TD4 engine but as the one I am looking at is an L-Series was hoping to get some advise from people that have owned them :).

Edit - hope this doesnt come across as rude and thank you for the welcome!

Welcome to the madhouse. If the Freelander has all the bells and whistles it's a keeper as being an original. With idea of eventually be a classic due to age

I can't imagine you've heard many good things about the TD4, at least about its reliability, as it's not great.

The L series is much more reliable, but not very powerful as standard.
However as above, if the engine has been maintained correctly, then 200k isn't a problem, however that's pretty much reaching the mileage limit of the rest of the vehicle, so it could well be tired.

Update - not that anyone asked for it.. but I bought it!!!!
It needs a bloody good clean but it's in really good condition. No rust, a CV gone but that's about all to report. The engine (as you all said) runs sweet as a nut. So thank you all for giving me the courage to make the jump!!

Here's to two puddles of oil on the drive!:p
