freelander 1 fans not working

Please does any one on here have any advice my freelander 1 1.8 petrol 2002 went for mot passed but they said the fans do no work when the engine gets hot hence it boils over.
I have looked at a new fan system but the cost is more than the car. I have change the sensor on the engine block and when the 2 fans are directly wired to the battery they both work does any one have any ideas or short cuts.
Could I wire the fans to a switch which looks possible but the cable leading in is mighty thick for ever greatful for any help I need this little beauty to carry my work stuff many thanks BulkerB

I believe there are 2 temp sensors on the K series engine - 1 for the engine ECO and another for the dash display. did you change the correct one?

Might be worth putting it on diagnostics to see what the engine ECU thinks the temperature of the engine is.

I would imagine that if the ECU 'turns on' the fans, it is actually energising a relay, could this relay have failed?

As you can tell - I don't know huge amounts about the K Series, I'm sure others will be along that do. You could try reading up in the LR Rave Workshop Manual on the fans and their wiring. There's info on downloading the manual here...

The fans on a 2001 onwards FL1 (AC models) are controlled by the engine ECU, taking temperature information from the coolant temperature sensor. There's no separate fan sensor as it's all done via the ECU. The engine ECU then controls the fan speed via the fan control module which is fitted to the fan shroud, on the battery side of the radiator. The fan control module is supplied with battery power from the main fuse and ground too. The module the outputs a variable voltage to the fan motors, based on a PWM signal received from the engine ECU. This PWM signal is supplied to the fan module by a thin wire (I can't remember the colour), so this is worth checking the connections for corrosion, as they are subject to some pretty poor conditions, and the PWM signal is easily distributed.
