Hi guys, I'm new to this so please bare with me!!! I've got a 2004 1.8 freelander 1. I've heard all the hg horror stories but I'm at a loss. The car looses a full tank of coolant in about 15 mins but there is no oil/water mix anywhere and no white smoke when driving. No obvious leaks anywhere either. There is air getting into the system as when the cap is taken off to refill a gasp of air comes out. Is this still possibility hgf or could it be something else? Someone did say IMG???

TIA

Very likely and not uncommon. Might also evaporate fast if engine hot. Drive it around if it's not losing on idle and look on the rear of the engine, at the base of the manifold. That is were that silly gasket is.
Can go by the feel as well. Mine had this issue and made me remove the cylinder head before reading forums.

Thanks - I'll give it a go. Also, before I noticed the coolant loss, the engine developed a slight ticking. Is that consistent with the IMG failing? It also can be a bit lumpy when first started.

That I do not know sorry never had THAT issue. Check that gasket first could be easy fix if lucky.
I don't think it's the head gasket in your case that will cause different signs.

If the HG has failed enough to drain the tank while driving, then it would actually blow the coolant from the system, through the pressure cap.

Definitely check the IMG first. There are other places for coolant leak. The thermostat housing is a common problem area, around it's various O rings, although those normally show as drips.

Thanks for that. Just a quick ask, is it just the green runber gasket on the manifold inlet?

Don't change it yet. Make sure that is it... Before ordering stuff... LKJ101110 is the part
So will i potentially need the rubber and metal gasket or would I just need to change the rubber one?? Sorry to be a pain in the @#*x!!

No metal there just plastic and rubber... It is not easy to change but not hard either. The meal one is prob the cyl head one.

I had a leaky heater pipe that emptied the coolant on my 1.8. It was a dodgy connection at the front of the engine.
With the engine running go round all the pipes and push/pull everything you can find.
If your lucky it'll suddenly show.

Not sure what metal gasket you refer to. Are you looking in front of the engine or back?
Exhaust is not in but out. There is a gasket there that looks metal but surely no way of losing coolant there.

There are 2 shown in some places when I look for a replacement online. Just wondered if they both need to be done or is it just the green rubber one? See picture attached - if it come out lol!!
