hi, just want to know which is the best engine oil make to use in my freelander td4 53 plate.as i am very confused:confused: as there are so many makes like comma,morris,shell,mobil 1 5w/30.which oil do other members of the forum use ?
 
10w-40 spec B3. is the important bit. pays ya money and takes your choice on brand.. I use part-synthetic as oppose to full. Fully synthetic seems to be overkill to me.

. . .I use halfrads half synthetic as i change it every year anyhows , its as good as any, cannot see the piont in full synthetic :)

Fully synthetic A3 B3 B4 5W/40 Tesco £8.97 per two litres. You need 3 containers for an oil and filter change. Why use part synth when fully is this money.

5W/40 is what it says. If we get a spot of cold weather the 5W will make things easier for the starter. Every little helps.
I've no connections with Tesco by the way.

Had a flick though the service record of the TD4 today before it was picked up for its MoT, and the oil for the last service was 5w.

If only more people would buy 4x4's we would be enjoying lovely global warming (sorry it's now called climate change) and you wouldn't be shivering or need 5W.
Incidentally until now due to warranty,etc my TD4 has had main dealer servicing so part synth at £54 +vat, key fob battery at £3. Still somebody has to pay for the smart suits and the coffee machine. I am certain I was the first one to remove the engine undertray, its easier to do the ticks on the check list. I did of course know what I was getting and only paid for one service, I think I did well with them overall despite the service charge. Cheers to you. John.

On a general car forum here in Belgium there was a guy who said he paid 18.54 £ for one liter of oil for his VW, at an official stealer that was. When I asked him whether that oil contained gold flakes against corrosion he thought I was pulling his leg :D , especially after I quoted him some prices I saw at Makro's (member of the Metro department stores group) for Marly oil, fully synthetic, for 30 (rpt 30) liter it is 47.46 £ and for 30 liter of semi-synthetic it is 41.52 £. I further told him that, since a private person can have such good oil (which Marly is) at that price in a department store a dealer, getting it's oil in 200 liter drums, is even getting better conditions and consequently bigger benefits. Anyway, such prices as 18.54 £ for ONE liter seems to be perfectly normal amongst the youngsters these days, when one dares to have criticism on it they call you names.....:p If I was a stealer and I had such customers I wouldn't hesitate either to ask these prices..., the sheep are queueing up at the cash register in order to have the 'pleasure' to pay.
 
Exactly my point Willow.. Why buy engine oil developed for F1 race cars running @ 16000rpm or whatever.. just to put it in a diesel engined road car?
as long as it meets the manufactuers recommended spec it will do the job.
Obviuosly there are other criteria to take into consideration. school run, stop start motoring will require a better oil than a car cruising up the motorway all day, but whatever motoring you do a quality semi-synthetic around £25 (e.g. Castrol Magnatec) will do as opposed to my bargain priced acdelco for £7-99. Which was'nt on offer when i bought it. cost me £10 so mine must be better cause it cost more :) :) :)
 
td4 engine ,,,oil choice is a bit of a grey area, but if you use what the manufacturer recommends then you cant go far wrong,

im sure any 20/50w would do a reasonable job,its cheap and chearfull , but possibly false econmy, bear in mind a fully synthetic oil can withstand higher temps without deteorating and turning into sludge,

for me i use fully synthetic 0/5w , i dont mind paying a little bit extra knowing that im getting :-
1, oil that can withstand high temps , and not cook when it meets the turbo bearings (very high temps)
2, longer life expectancy =better engine protection, (at least 12k miles before i even think of changing and it still looks good when i change it)
3, easier starting, better fuel consumption



EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO MAKE THERE OWN MISTAKES
 
yes have been looking at the handbook and it recommands 5w/30 fully synthetic and the dealers too.so its time to make a decision on brand morris or comma ,might use comma syner z 5w/30 will cost though £30 for 5 litres but probly worth it since my td4 has only done 20,000 miles or i would use 5w/40 might be better .
 
Well I dont have that deep pockets, but if i'm not now paying £250 for a so called service where its hard to see what they can actually do with a modern car, apart from filling the last inch of the windscreen wiper bottle and charging for the lot, i'm quite happy to use the best because of the turbo etc, and do it every 8000 miles (compromise) and use BP 1. 15/40 fully synthetic.
 
revver, if you are doing the work yourself, it shouldnt cost much more than £50 for synthetic oil and filter , and 12 k miles is no problem for this type of oil, ( a lot of modern diesels go well over 20 k using fully synthetic before oil changes ) and the td4 is no different to them

you can save a few quid putting in semi but for that little bit extra cost its peace of mind
