Free wheel hubs on series 3

I hve recently bought a series 3 with free wheel hubs. It seems that it is in 4wd high permanently as to get out of 4wd low I have to depress the yellow lever and it stays down until I go to low range again. Was this done for technical reasons or was it a bit of a mix up. I am keen to get an answer as i would like it to be 2wd high for normel driving with the hubs freewheeling.

Thanks Bill

Er, you sure? What makes you think it's staying in 4wd high permanently? Pushing down the yellow lever should put it into 4wd high. Moving the red shift forward then backwards again should make the yellow lever pop up and leave you in 'normal' 2wd high again.

To get it IN to 4WD in high range just shove the short lever with the yellow knob DOWN. It will stay down.

The only way to get back to two wheel drive is the red knob. You heave it BACK to engage TWO things, LOW RANGE and Four Wheel Drive. When you shove it forwards again it does two things - engages HIGH range, and DIS-engages 4WD. That is the correct and only way to get it OUT of 4 wheel drive in High range, and back to normal two wheel drive.

Just be sure to STOP before you shift from High range to LOW range and back again because if you try it at 20 or 30 mph there's going to be a trail of cogs behind you..

Hi all the reply guys to my query on free wheel hubs

The way you all remark is the way it should work and the way I expected mine to work. pulling the red knob does release the yellow knob but cant push the red knob back to high without pushing yellow down. This is the odd bit thai I am querying.
