Fording in a P38 DSE

Hi all!

There's a debate going on in my offroad club (Klub38, an all P38 club

) about the viscous fans in the diesel breaking when they enter water. This happened to two of the members when they were fording. Obviously, others (myself included) have gone through water without any problems. So I'm looking for the LZ input about this: do you usually cross deep rivers with your DSEs and have you ever had this problem ? Is it usual in these models ?

Surely the only logic to this is, if the coupling is weak and almost worn, then the friction of the water on the fan is likely to wear it out when used for fording.

I don't see how else it would affect it.

with any viscous fan if its locked by heat or bodge it will break ,remove when you know your going wading

Wouldn't your air intake be sucking in water long before this got to be a problem?

and wouldnt the p38 breakdown long before it even got to the ford
