hi all well i am not happy at all there is something up with my handbrake on my 90
my h/brake lever tensions up as always but doesnt hold at all
so ive fitted a new cable checked the shoes and cleaned the other bits and bobs in there worked for a day or 2 them same again
so striipped it down again messed about with it couldnt see any thing wrong so refitted the drum and worked fine went to work this morning worked fine but the time i got to work not working again
it looks like when you take the h/brake of the rod doesnt seem to go in to the back of the drum
and help would be good thanks:confused:

Get a copy of RAVE manual and make sure you have all the bits in the right places.

It must have a bit boken / missing / loose / wrong way round.

Have you driven any distance with the handbrake stuck ON?

If so the linings will be FRIED and wrecked. You should have smelled a bad hot smell if that was happening.

I have this problem too, ( only had the 90 2 day not had time to look yet) but also had it on my old disco.

the problem seams to lie with the expandor moving. first cheek its put together right, and the fix i have seen is to bolt it to the back plate. (there is a thread on it some were)

Dose any one swapping the old rod had brake for a later cable one is just a case of swapping them over?
I only ask as i have the remains of a 96 disco in the garden.

I must have a disco one on mine, was on the transfer box when i fitted it. I cant remember which cable i used in the end, there was a discrepancy i remember that. They tent to sease up when you fill them with muddy water alot, pull it appart, clean it all up, ajust the cable and it will work good as new (i know it means pulling the propshaft off!) Untill you ruin it again doing hand brake turns that is...

Its so easy to strip it down and reassemble it wrong with only one roller or slide in the correct way you will only get half or A 3rd of the movement you are supposed to have. It will be good for a while until the expander unit centers itself correctly on the backplate (it shoukd center each time and be free to move about slightly but most peeps dont clean it and it hangs in one spot until you really put the handbrake on) then you will get fook all movement and no handbrake.

Only cure it to dissasemble the hand brake assembly and expander unit degrease, reassemble as per the rave CD with plenty of grease. Make sure you adjust it in the correct sequence. Do not put the prop on yet!

Once the unit it fitted back up on the land rover lock up the drum tight with the adjuster on the back plate tap all around with a soft mallet, slacken right off and re do this again a few times (this centers the expander unit). Adjust the shoes up so you get a very slight resistance when turning the drum. then take off 1/4 or 1/2 turn (equlivent to 2 flats on the tapered square) of the shoes in the drum. Now the drum is adjusted do not touch it again. Next adjust your hand brake cable to this you should be left with 2 mabe 2.5 clicks before the handbrake is on enough to stall your engine. 90/110 hand brakes are poor and have never been that good but adusted correctly they last a while. There are 2 kinds of hand brake, the one that the cable pulls a rod, and one were the cable finishes inside the drum.
The latter being from 300tdi on,

From my experience the later one is a lot more reliable, as the crap can't get in side as easy to make a mess.

Iv had a look and should be a strait swap, just need a new cable.
