I recently had a new flywheel and clutch fitted to my tdi300. I am a little concerned about the diesel knock and decided to check the pump timing. When I set the engine up with the flywheel mark, the pump checking slot was I the 4 o'clock position. The last time I checked it it was I the 11 o'clock position. Before the flywheel was replaced. Could the flywheel have been fitted 180 degrees out by the garage? When I did check the timing in the 4 o'clock position the pulley seemed to click into position and the engine would start and was quiet. It would then miss fire until revving with blue smoke. Is this too retarded causing this issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike.

diesel knock will only come from a few degrees advancement from optimum, flywheels will only fit in one postion due to a locating dowel , some flywheels have several slots as same flywheel was later used to build other landy engines as well, just changing flywheel wouldnt effect timing unless you worked on belt/pump t the front ,do you have a knock at tick over that goes when revs are raised ,did you have a new clutch fitted especially heavy duty one ,as thats most common source of knock

The knock is there when cold at tick over and when revved until warm The clutch was replaced with an had item, this did not change the engine from before fitting. The engine went very smooth and quiet when I reset the timing at what I thought was the correct position from the flywheel marking. It would rev ok but misfire on very low part throttle and it seemed to smoke (blue) The pulley seemed to click into the location. The timing pin seemed to fit in both extremities of the pulley movement. For now I have move the pulley a tiny bit away from the misfiring smokey position and it seems to be better. Not happy with this as a solution so we I think I will have to have the timing cover off as I no longer trust the work dome when the timing belt was changed some time earlier!

timing if out will only be slightly ,if you take frnt cover off check flywheel pin lines up with dot and arrow on crank pulley at 12oclock

Thanks, I will do. I think I will change the belt and ancillaries just I case cheap items were used. I will get a defacto set up from the front of the crank. I will pay close attention to ensure correct alignment. Is this easy with the engine still in the car? I do not want to take out the radiator if possible as I have just replaced this. I do not have a viscous fan so no cowl either. Is there enough room to get an air wrench on the pulley nut with the above in mind?

Thanks

Mike
