Hi All

I am going to do a long towing trip next year.

Although the car is fully serviced, I am thinking of changing all transmission fluids, axles and Gearboxes.

should I:
1. give it to a main dealer?
2. give it to a local LR specialist?
3. do it myself?

any thoughts on cost difference?

Planning to do this sometime this summer..

cheers.

Do it yourself yer chicken...:D:D:D:D:D

Saying that you would do well to have a ramp available or a way of lifting the car up so it is level when doing the fluids esp. the gearbox....

I (naughtily) use 4 drive up ramps to raise the vehicle, and you'll also need a method of pumping the fluid into the gear box, I use a fence sprayer! See my How To's in the How To section!

+ 1. I used a bit of hose pipe to fill gearbox back up on the TD6.

My only advice is make sure you can remove the filler plugs BEFORE you remove the drain plugs ....! :D

Cost wise you will save lots of £££ and IMO it's good to get underneath and get to know it better.

anyone got any experience on doing these ?

I"m yet do do mine in the near future.
But They are pretty straight forward to do. I did see a write up somebody had done somewhere online (on the other side of the pond I believe), think it was on another forum !
The transfer box oil tends to come out pretty shot around the 100k mark.
There is a little diff 'guard' below the front diff held on by 3 bolts I think, will prob be easier to remove that (also easier to collect old oil whilst draining)

I wouldn't drive a Range Rover I'd just bought 10 yards further than I need to without changing ALL the fluids. I just don't understand people who are enthusiastic enough to be perusing LR forums and yet they are happy enough to drive around in cars with unknown mileage on their diff, transfer box, brake or transmission fluids. Get on with it - or take it to a transmission specialist! (forget dealers - you cannot trust them or service records further than you can throw a grand piano.)

Every vehicle I have ever bought irrespective of history I have always changed all fluids. Some people say it's costly and or unnecessary, but at least you can get some indication of its past and it gives you peace of mind especially with SWMBO and the bairns on board

If you want a job done do it yourself. You can keep main dealers . Top up merchants I call them.

Most of all its the saving of the £.s.d. I recently saw an invoice from a main dealer where a charge of £6.50p was levied for waste oil disposal, and VAT was then added to that.
