Hi all,
first post, after my introduction earlier today.

This has probably been asked many times, but cant find anything after a search of the previous threads on here.

I was told it's normal for the battery to go flat on a 2.5tdi Disco1 (98) if it isn't used for a week or so. and it must be driven almost every day.

True? or have i been misinformed?

I can live with it if it's true but if it shouldn't happen then i 'll get it sorted.
The previous owner used to keep it topped up by use of a trickle charger when not being used. i can't really do that as the car is parked on the road opposite my house.

The battery shouldn't go flat after 5 days i could leave mine standing for a month and it would start.

You either have a electrical fault somewhere draining the battery or the battery is knackered.
 
When I bought my D1 last year in Feb, it had old battery which went flat after a week.
Now I have Varta battery and can leave it for a month even in cold weather - always works.
 
Depends on what parasitic load you have. If you have alarms and lights, radio memory, etc running when the engine is off then it will use power and flatten the battery. Once you figure out how much is needed, you get a battery with enough AH for the time required.
 
get battery checked.
Just had mine done was ok but had a prob one morning starting. popped to my mates parts place put the tester on it . The one with the 2 big probs big lump of metal between in a box

. It showed up ok. even the little green ball in battery was showing up so it looked ok. but we got to play with his new electronic battery tester.

its just a small box lcd screen and little printer built in. we put on battery and put in batt specs. up came results batt was fooked should be 95ah was showing on working as 50ah and only 60% life in it. so i got new battery.

just to check out the tester i borrowed it to test on a few batts at home some i know are fooked some i know are good and some Im not sure.
it was able to tell which was which and i was able to find out about the not sures.
So im impressed with this new tester and not some gizmo to flog new batts to unsurspecting punters

It was for a 300tdi Disco

It's not true,you need a new battery. Tanya Batteries do a 1000mca (equiv to 850cca) battery which is extremely popular in the off-roading world.
 
just a quick update.....I am going to borrow a mates spare battery for a couple of weeks. 100AH and a CCA of 850A
See how that works

Crap....This is getting harder..
Tried to use a friends with higher spec...battery too big!
So i have been trying different places and not having much luck trying to get a better spec to fit in the tray
current battery is 72AH and 680CCA 260mm x 173mm
Whenever i find one that has a 800cca they are always too long!
Looked on te tayna website and their 'upgrade' seems worse?
 
Sorry back again...Any one know what the maximun current draw should be when everything switched off?

Will check that first before going down the new battery route i think.
 
Well,,Success, i think.
Had the battery checked at local garage using electronic equipment and it's showing as a big NO.(no good)
Got back and stuck the multimeter on went straight on 0.21 amps left o on and waited for about 1/2 for an hour to make sure everything had closed down went back and it showed a constant 0.05A which i believe is Just about acceptable.
So it's a new battery needed.

If I might suggest a spec of battery for you? 70amp/hr or so is enough, but the key spec is CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) this is the part of the battery that gives good starting especially in cold weather. You need at least 800cca.

Thanks Dave. I will definitely be looking to get that spec of battery...just seems to be proving a little difficult to get the size that will fit in the available space.
