I have seen kits for locking the axel diffs together. Are these a good idea? How do you fit them?

Seems like an interesting idea for being able to lock them and the standard centre diff?

They fit in the rear differential and you need to follow manufacture instruction

Anyone have any experience of using these them? Are they any real benefit? I am looking at them for my 200TDi 90 as a possible mod.

If you are into extreme off roading as in mud running yes. for about 750quid or so good ones are air operated then you have to add a air compressor to your fender. And they can get you into trouble with lack of driving experience with them, as sliding off the trail into the ditch, rocks, trees or what ever is on the side of you.

depends what you want to use them for, how much you want to spend, how much you favour reliability, how much off tarmac you do etc etc.

Do you fully understand how they work? there is no point having them if you do not understand it.

I recently fitted a Detroit rear locker and the performance off road has been exceptional. Much better than I anticipated.

I understand the concept of how they work. My old Shogun used to have mag locking diffs front and rear. I assume these work in a similar way.

I am completely open to comment and advice, just exploring options recently. Primarily green lane stuff but I have just been introduced to the joy of pay and play days. Last weekend at Yarwell was great fun and I am really looking to see what the potential is as experience grows.

Despite having been taught to drive these by the military for full off road use in combat I am finding the experience of using them for fun quite different and highly enjoyable.

Clearly as I am exposed to more people doing this as a hobby, I am seening things like diff locks, lift kits, winches etc and the possibilities intrigue me!!

I'd only start looking into ARB diff lockers etc if I really needed them. If you're just getting into pay and play (and the money is burning hole in your pocket) I'd spend the money on a good winch bumper and a winch first.

You will find its only the extreme off road surfaces that require them.... as Fur Trapper said, serious mud plugging

OK, thanks for that. A winch was on my shopping list!
If you want a locker a good alternative might be a posi locking which has a clutch in it. When one tire spins it throws a clutch to lock the other tyre and then when not needed kicks out.

This is what most all trucks (4x4) have here in the USA, and they work great. Have that in my farm truck and suv and they work great for us.Gets me where I want to go:D

make sure you get a good one and its fastened to something sturdy e.g. the chassis / winch bumper

2nd hand winches are about £300 and thats for a cheap one !! you may also need a 2nd battery and then a split charger to help power it. Search around on here to see what people recommend

Trapper has decribed an LSD (Limited slip differential) Detroit make the truetrac which works in this way but not a clutch pack so no worn parts. Its what I thought I was buying when I ended up with this Detroit Locker.

I wouldn't say ARB or nothing, there are many options, ARB may not suit your needs.

got an arb in the front and rear of my rr bobtail

offroad at p+p and in competition they proved invaulable
just dont get in the habit of whackin them on for the sake of it,take time to access the situation ahead and judge whether there needed, too many people just whack em on for the sake of it polish up on your driving techniques offroad 1st

never tried any other types of lockers, but people who have detroits will say there best and arb are ****,people who have arb will say detroit are **** if u see what i mean
