Hello,

I only managed to get 15MPH out of my 2.5 N/A up a very steep hill today in second gear (it wouldn't have it in 3rd). If I were to fit a turbo would it make much difference? Can I actualy fit a turbo to a standard 2.5 N/A?

I'm all for keeping her as she is, but if I could pull up that hill at 30-40 I'd be laughing!

Thanks in advance for any oppinions

i understand that you can fit a turbo but it is not recomended as the engine is not made for it!!! to be honest iv just swaped my n/a for a 200tdi disco engine and now no problems!!!

Its identical to the 2.5TD... Technically the 2.5TD is just a turbo shoved onto a 2.5N/A and as a result I agree its not the best idea, however, it can be done, and is perfectly legitimate.

If you can get a turbo, the turbo manifold then away you go, and you can put the proper IP on it too if you want.

I have the 2.5N/A and have no problems with it, could be its just knackered or you expecting too much out of it, how steep is this hill, are other vehicles going up it at 30/40mph?

Yeah other cars can climb the hill at around 30 - 40 mph, the TD5 110 that we work with climbs at about 35-40 no problem. 15 in a 90 just seems so damn slow! If I can get hold of a turbo from somewhere, I might try it out for a week or two, just out of interest. It is 21 years old mind, so I've got to accept that it's a **** slow engine. It's not too bad on the flat.

The hill is like this:

for a good mile

To be honest, it sounds like yours could do with a tweak somewhere, timing maybe.

My 2.5N/A will cruise happily enough on the motorway, up hills and all at over 70 in 5th.

Its not the quickest engine, but I can pull away fast enough if I need to.

A TD5 110 should have the best part of twice the power and torque of your N/A 90... hardly surprising you're only managing half the speed really.

By the time you've turbo'd the N/A, fixed the problems and niggles associated with yer conversion and then, finally, got around to replacing the now shagged N/A because you've blown it up by putting a turbo on it on the cheap, you'll probably have spent about the same amount of money as converting it to a Tdi.

Better idea would be to sell the 90, save up for a bit and buy an early 200tdi - cheaper in the long run and it'll blow the doors of a 12J powered 90, even if you do stick a turbo on it :D

Thanks for replies,

Sticking a turbo in it aint gonna happen then, and I'll only end up shagging a push rod or something. It seemed nippy today, unno what's wrong with it. I will have a tinker with the lift pump timing some time over Summer.

As for buying a 200tdi landy, that's not happening just yet. This is my first car and I'm happy with it, just not up hills. It is fine on the motor way, will stick at 65 up hills, then 70 again on flat. I'm planning on running it 5 or 6 years unless it gets to be a pain in the arse, and then buying a 200/300 tdi.

Timing her might help

You guys are lucky as you all are in UK, but for guys like us its a dream especially being in India, where defenders are very very rare. Have to do with my 2.5 NA Diesel.

You have those god awful jeep things. Dunno if they're made by Tata or who, but they're crap & only 2WD.

I went up a fekin steep hill just outside Udaipur in one. Got up there at a walking pace, but was terrifying coming back down with rudimentary, un-serviced brakes!

Was the swap from NA to 200 TDI a drop in or you had to do a lot of pipe & electrical work on it.
