Fitting a Subwoofer Amp and Speaker

I have a 2004 Freelander S that doesn't come with a factory fitted subwoofer. It has the single cd player/radio head unit fitted.
I am thinking of fitting a third party amp and sub woofer
Does anyone know if head unit has the connections to switch a sub woofer amp and the line out connection for an amp?

Best thing to do it take it out and have a look, as for switch u can always use power from ur cigarette lighter,

I would not have thought so on a base model. I want to do a simular thing on mine. You may have to buy an RCA line out convertor, in order to convert the speaker wires into RCA's in order to be able to install an amp. Maybe it's different now but manufacturers did not seem to have caught on with the idea that we may want to put an amp and a sub in to boost their pathetic systems and put in a remote wire and some pre outs on their head units. Not all of us want to install an aftermarket unit to draw in thieves attention.

best bet get a after market head unit, u can get em for around 60 quid, it will have all the connections needed

I expect you are right about having to take it out but I was hoping someone might have done it before and be able to tell me. Taking the head unit out isn't as straight forward on the face lift model as it was on the earlier ones

Is this the sort of thing you mean? Phonocar 4/136 High Level Adaptor
Does it allow you to carry on using the built in speakers and provide a feed for the amp at the same time?

The converters are a bit pants tho tbh

Yes thats the sort of thing. I think you will have to get an amp that does at least 4 channels so as to provide power for your speakers.

I fitted a JL Audio 6 inch sub under the passenger seat the amp and sub fits beautifully, I fitted a Sony head unit.

I have a Freelander 1 yr2000, and want to fit a subwoofer in the boot, where can I find a grommet hole to feed the power supply from the battery (engine bay) to the cockpit of the vehicle?

Please help, photo's would be great!

There is a grommet in the bulkhead behind the fusebox (on a 2004 model, yours might be different). It is hard to reach (especially if you have air con) and you have to undo the mountings for the fuse box to get it out of the way and then cut a slit in the grommet to feed the cable through. It comes out very high up in the passenger footwell and is very hard to reach the wire once you have got it through.

By the way, my factory fitted head unit didn't have any line out or remote power switch connectors. I used one of the line out converters like I linked to higher up the thread and took the remote power from the ignition switched power for the head unit. It all sounds great now, so much better than the factory fitted head unit and speakers on their own. The amp I used was this http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/mut-mt1202r-mutant-mt-1202r.html The speakers are two 8ohm cones wired in parallel to present 4ohms to the amp. They are mounted in a cabinet that I made myself from MDF after doing some googling.

[EDIT] No pics of where the grommet is, you can't see it, you have to do it by touch

Thank you Martin, this info is great, I already have a after market kenwood head unit, but decided to take the sub out of my other car, and put it in my freelander. I will be have a go at it this weekend and I will try n get some step by step pics of the install.

If you have an after market sterio dont use the adapters, the quility isnt as good.
