Fitting a Snorkel

Only a request that you give me a blow-by-blow account of it to help when I fit mine! I'd be particularly interested in how you think the seals are through the body and onto the existing hosework.

Do you have a piccy of it? If it's the same as the Bearmach one (which I think it is) watch out for their dodgy instructions on drilling the pillar. One of the windscreen pillar mounts has 2 locations on the destruction sheet. If you drill the wrong location it'll fowl the interior trim screw hole.

make sure you have a roll of masking tape and some black sealer to hand before starting

Mask around the side vent so that if you accidently apply too much sealent it will come off when you remove the tape. Don't test the snorkel to see if it's airtight until AFTER the sealant has dried.:eek::D:D:D

Theres no destructions with it! But I'll have a crack at getting a photo up!

Cobnut, I'll try and take pictures as I go, but I'm not the best with photos, writing or anyother thing that requires intelligence.

But try I will, and I'll get cracking now....quiet day at work, with the boss being Irish and half the lads, no-ones in yet!

yep It's the same as mine.

before you drill the pillars, Check that you aren't about to drill near the interior trim fixings. The pillar is about 12mm thick in the thinest part.

don't forget to apply sealer to the surface/joint of every item. Gaskets included. It won't be fully waterproof until you have done the same to the standard piping too.
 
Dry fit it all first, make sure bits line up, then start engine side first, I'd say.

Not, I hasten to add, that I've fitted a snorkel, but it's common sense really ... ;)
 
I'd loosely assemble it and offer it up. mark all the holes and then drill them all. Then swear a lot because despite doing this 2 of the ****ers still don't match up properly..
 
So....this is what I'm gonna do:

Step 1: Get together drill, bolts, spanners, ratchet, black sealer and the magic green tape.
Step 2: Swear
Step 3: Loosely (dry) assembly
Step 4: Swear
Step 5: Remove the cover on the air intake thats there already
Step 6: Swear
Step 7: Get it in position and mark holes
Step 8: Swear
Step 9: Go mad with drill
Step 10: F*ck it and go have a fag
Step 11: Fix bottom part to the hole in the wing and seal
Step 12: Seal next part upwards, repeat to top
Step 13: Bolt it all in place


Anyone seen any problems yet? I'm sure theres loads
 
Looks straight forward to fit , as everybody has said seal everything as you go , pay attention where it goes through the wing . Apart from that easy job :) .

Loosely fit the side vent pipe on it's own first. When you are happy with it's position, take it off, seal all mating surfaces and re-fit it properly.

take off the interior trim panel

hold or tape the pillar support brackets in place while checking that their are no obstructions in the way on the interior. Mark the holes and drill them.

Fit the support brackets to the pillar.

Next fit the mushroom to the top of the snorkel.

Then loosely attatch the round mounting clamps to the upper pipe and bolt em to the mounting brackets. There are small rubber strips that sit between the round clamps and the upper pipe that are MEANT to stop it slipping.

join the 2 rigid pipes with the flexi-pipe without the jubilee clips.

Now is the time to adjust the height of the the top pipe so as to make sure that it isn't so low that the flexi-pipe is creased and it isn't too high that you will take the top off on the first low obstacle you come to.

When you are happy that it's right. Bolt it all down tight.

The rubber grips that sit under the upper retaining rings slip out when you are moving. Either hold em in place with small cable ties or silicone them to the rings to stop em vibrating out.

Finally, remove the flexi pipe and re-fit it WITH the jubilee clips, applying sealer to the joints as you do so.
 
Duly noted....bet its more expensive....grumble....f*cking lady costing me more money and time...grumble

Edit: Looked at the link, and its not expensive...but still....grumble grumble...f*cking lazy

I think you will find you are short of around 10 fags and 3 beers in that workflow, together with the "forgot that bit, strip it all down and start again" step which will occur either after step 12 or 13 or both.
