I am buying a non LR part towbar & electrics kit from a local source, can I easily connect to the car wiring without the plug that comes with the LR kit??

the towbar fit itself is very easy, see here

if you are not going to use the plug, located at the rear of the upper right light, then simply locate it and crimp off the wires. best really not to cut the wires from the block. there is more than enough cable for the connections to be done just prior to it.
obviously this is for the 12n (black socket). the 12s is a different matter and one that i have had no dealings with. a search on the topics links will help you here.

i believe the colours are socket to car

l ind. yellow to black/white
fog blue to blue
earth white to brown
r ind. green to green/black
r side brown to red/grey
stop red to red/black
l side to black grey
fog cut out (if using) grey to grey

if all done correctly, and with trailer connected there is no buzzer when indicating, a green trailer light flashes on the dash.

Many thanks for that, I am assuming that the physical bolt-on of the bar is quite straight forward, & that I don't have to remove the rear bumper?
Your advice is much appreciated.

I have a Landrover towbar assembly but I would guess that other makers are similar - it bolts onto the chassis members below the bumper so this does not need to be removed.

I fitted the 12S (grey) plug to mine and used a kit from a caravan dealer that came with its own relay and instructions that were easy to follow, IIRC the reverse lights for a caravan are located in the 12S plug so if these are required, you need to locate the reverse light supply feed and tap into this.

no you dont need to remove anything, other than the upper right light cluster lens, to get to the electric plug loom.
look under the rear of your disco at the centre point.
immediately after the bumper are two vertical holes, these are pre tapped.
follow the chassis members toward the rear wheels and you will see the other two mounting points. these are horizontal through holes for the other bolts.
thats it four bolts.
easy

after reading another thread today, it would seem if there is no buzzer connected to your towbar electrics, then the dashboard trailer light will flash when indicating. my guess is the buzzer overrides the flash.
either complies with the latest regulations.

Fitted bar today, quite straight-forward, intending to wire electrics in morning, I will be using the snap connectors that came with the kit, to tap into the rear lights, there is a buzzer included, is there a pre-drilled hole somewhere to feed the cable up to the light cluster? & what the hell is the buzzer for??

remove the upper right rear light cluster lens (4 screws) and drop the cable in that way. it will find its own way out.
it will appear in the bottom right corner just behind the bumper.
you should see the pre wired cable in there already with a plug on the end. you can tap off here.

the buzzer is a legal item. it will buzz when the trailer is connected and you are indicating. no buzz no indicators on trailer.

there is another on going thread at the moment that argues as to wether a buzzer is required as we have a trailer light on the dash that flashes instead of the buzz.
