You are the man Chunkymunky. Would you be willing to post a pic of ur engine so I can compare them? Are the engines reliable? Also how hard is it to find replacement parts. I want to fix it up and take it back to the States when I go back
 
First off I want to figure out what's up with that black box on the passenger side? Second the air intake hose and turbo hose need to be replaced they both have holes in them. What type and weight of oil should I use
 
The 19j is a pretty antique engine as it goes. With good servicing ( by yourself) and making sure it stays cool it's not a bad engine. Will keep going years but very slow and the head can go.

The common thing to do is convert it to tdi which isn't a terribly difficult job as I did it myself. Haven't got a pic of the old engine now. Parts are not hard to find on eBay.

Not saying I am def right but it certainly looks the same engine.
 
Looking closer but it looks series 3. Door handles and air intake. Pretty sure you have a series 3 2.25 diesel there.

I think I need to shut up now. James. Help. It's a 2.25 isn't it?
 
So say you are right and I convert the engine. Do they make a full kit or individual parts. Do you remember bout how much it cost you?
 
Easiest way to convert is buying a donor vehicle like a 200tdi discovery. It's slightly different on a series 3 which yours looks like. If you can get a defender 200tdi engine much better because the turbo is up high and won't be near the chassis.
 
What do you mean by the turbo is up high and not on the chassis? My turbo isn't down by the chassis? I'll def start looking for a newer engine.
 
The only number I can find on the top of the engine is the one from the pic I posted
the numbers are on the block not head , its not going to be complete land rover as its a santana but many bits will be ie the injectors will be std 2.5 lr but air pipes arent ,oil any like 10/40 or 20/50 etc

this must be his engine then
a 75-horsepower turbocharged version of the 2.25 diesel in 1982. While there is no evidence of the six-cylinder engines ever being evaluated by Solihull, the 2.25TD engine
 
Sounds like that one Chris.

Deep sea. By turbo position what I mean is on the discovery tdi the turbo is at the bottom. On the defender 200tdi the manifold is different so the turbo is high like yours. These are the most popular engines for conversions
 
Is this a air pump? Does it use oil for lubrication?
