Just picked up a hastily bid on '96 4.6 HSE from e-bay. Great looking car but what a mistake! The seller badly mis-listed it, not mentioning the one major factor wrong with it  - as soon as i drove it away I had low power and a very rough rattly engine under load - almost like it's running on 6 cylinders or something. Rattle is very loud and to be honest sounds pretty terminal - not very noticable when listening in the engine bay at idle or even when revved, only under load.

I now have a great looking range rover, bought admittedly for a very good price, but it's too bloomin' embarrassing to drive.

Any thoughts for a newbie would be appreciated!

Are you sure it's not a diesel ? :D

Seriously - tell me you didn't hand over the money without a good poke around and a test drive
How did you pay for it - cash or paypal
Put the ebay auction no. up so we can at least check out the listing for you
Private sale or dealer - we need more info

He musta took it back:D

yea, hopefully he took it back and got his money back and then went and bought a diesel, much more reliable :D

Seriously though, I can only ask what others have, did you not go for a test drive or ANYTHING before buying?!

-Wills :)

I think we need to know what yer paid for it.. Cos if yer ony paid a fiver.. yer got a bargin;)

I sold a 110 V8 pick up to a guy on another forum last year - turned up and handed over the cash, didn't look under the bonnet or start it up prior to driving away or even look underneath
He was lucky cos I put a lot of work into it and it was a good 'un, but part of me wishes it was a dog - it would have served him right ;)

Its a small world eh?

I thought I should put up my defence here, I sold the car in question which I now have back, The guy was a gentleman but admited he was not mechanically minded, I checked it over and found out it needs a coil pack (hence low power) and a downpipe gasket (hence rattle effect).

I have to admit I am embarresed to be shamed on here but its my own fault, the car hadn't been out for a week or so and a friend had used it last and I hadnt checked it, perhaps i was disinterested by the giveaway price! I'll get it sorted and back on this week hopefully,

I'm not a trader I just facied a change for a diesel one, it's a lot of car for less than 2k i feel it just takes a land rover ear to understand how delicate and quirky these machine can be,

he has recieved a full refund and admited he is gonna stick to saabs!
