dificulty selecting first or reverse on my series II is there a detent or is it hit or miss?

whip yer tranny cover orf and check that yer reverse had 2 springs on its flappy bit. the other balls, springs and plungers are under yer g/box top cover. you should see 2 'L' shaped brackets, one either side of cover. these are held in place by 2 screws each. undo the one on the same side as reverse and see if the ball and spring are ok and free to move..... note the use of the wurd 'SPRING' so be careful it dint go flying.

no just difficulty to select first bit sloppy
Thats sort of normal.
There is quite a wide target on 2a's. You need to do things slowly on a old Landy it's not like a new car, if you ease it in like count to 4 and it still give you problems or you cant take it out of gear then Like slob says its time to look at the springs and or your clutch dragging.

I'm assuming you have done the usual worn gearbox tests ?

As has been mentioned there is a flap device which is intended to protect reverse from accidental selection and make finding first easy. What happens is that as the lever is pushed beyond first it encounters the flap which provides an effective resistance - then swings out of the way allowing reverse to be selected.

The flap is mounted on the reverse selector itself at the base of the gearlever and has 2 smallish springs which hold it in the closed position. Over the years these snap - and so the lever moves right across the gate into the reverse selector with no resistance. The springs are part no 231116 and they cost about 31p each (+ VAT). They are quite useful for other things like replacing broken wiper arm springs - so you may want to buy a few more.

To replace them you'll have to take the gearbox tunnel up.
