My lads 17 next year and reckons he wants a series landy :D , so thought I best start looking, give me time to fix it up.

Is there much difference insurance wise between the engines ?.

I bought my son a Series III when he was 17, 2.25 Diesel. Insurance was £600 with Footman James.
I think both the Diesel & Petrol are group 2, so there shouldn't be any difference.

Great vehicles to learn in - station wagon gives you brilliant all round visibility, SWB is pretty manouverable, no experience of the diesel but the standard 2 1/4 petrol goes reasonably well. The odd dent and scuff adds to the character. Worth getting one with servo brakes.

Just be careful on the seats if you go down a station wagon route. A new (post 1997) driver needs a minibus licence for anything over 8 seats.

This legislation does not count the drivers seat as part of the 8 seats. We have several VW transporter vans at work with 2 front passenger seats, 2 rear passenger seats and a secure prisoner cage that hold 4 persons (counts as 4 seats) and we can drive this vehicle on a standard cat B license(post 1997) - Police do not have exemptions on license categories

Appologies I missed out the word passenger. Landrover put 12 seats in some motors to get round the tax rules.

A seat is a seat and for the purposes of licensing do definately count.

every time I come to try to insure my beast I have problems- I have three seats in front , three in middle and two side facing benches- with three seatbelts on each side- so do I have 8 seats or do I have 12- none of the companies ever know and it always confuses them- not printed on the log book so how do you know the official number of seats

3 in front plus 3 second row seats =6 + 2x3seater benches = 6+6 =12. plus side is it's exempt from congestion charge.

Downside is it will be effected by the LEZ if it is desiel.... Thus meaning you have to pay £100 a day in london
