Agree with all the comments about welding. I bought a Ninety that appeared to be solid - it failed it's MOT six months later with rot on the cross member and footwells. I bought a MIG welder off eBay, had a bit of a practise and then attacked the Landy with it. My welds may not be pretty, but they got the car through it's MOT. I'm about to start an evening course to improve my welding technique as it's actually quite good fun!

Ooo and btw...if your heart is set on a 90, dont go for a disco..

I did that mistake, really wanted a 90, but could only afford a disco, so bought it.
6 months after....i still wanted a 90, saved money and after a year of having the disco I finally bought my 90!

should have saved money in the first place and never bought the disco....

I agree with JP... saw a nice disco other nite on ebay was gonna see it today... but yesterday changed my mind due to it not bein a 90 :)

and a little more help to get you to buy that 90...
dont be put off by the welding stuff..... just to give you a little hope and show things are not as bad as they sound, remember I had never done any welding at all...
my MIG, a SIP100, cost 70 quid off ebay and I get the bits of metal out the bin of a metal fabrication place near me...

first time I started the work on the disco, it went from this...

ok the welds looks crap, but once grinded down, they look...a good welder just welds it and job done, I have a little more work as i have to make it look decent....

Once you get used to it, its dead easy and getting the MIG out and weld something that you have spoted, wont take long.
Like for example, I found a little hole on my 90 the other day..took me 10min to repair it...
the hole..

See?
sorry about the load of pics, but its just to show things are not as bad and difficult as they sound..
remember, I didnt know a thing about MIG welders, and was the good people of landyzone that told me to get on with the welding and forget about paying someone to do it.

thats the way learn on the job. I have been welding for a living for the last 6 years or so and still find it hard to get a nice looking weld on a car but as already said once its all gleand up it can still look good.

an arc welder uses a rod in the end of the lance (not ideal for cars) and a mig welder works with wire fed through a torch its a mig that you want rearlie

Ive tried the ARC welding first when my mate was teaching me to weld and its a real pain!

the MIG is much, much easier.... and looks a lot better for the car welding...

if you imagine, ARC welding is done with a rod, you have to keep the rod at a certain distance from the metal to create the arc, as you are doing this you have to move down as you are welding and at the same time, feed the rod in and its getting smaller...

then, you get to the end of the rod and have to replace with another one...
its a real pain!

MIG is much simpler as the wire is fed through the gun as you go along.
and get an auto darkening mask, helps loads when you start to weld as you'll be able to see what and where you are starting

i have an ARC inverter and its a great little machine, it cost a few bob though but so handy!

mig is easier to use but i find arc cheaper to run and once you get used to it its all the same.

Google sip T170 if ya fancy a look its about 2-3 kg and a foot in length

nice spot. I saw this one in the auto trader. It is being advertised by a trader he had it up for £2250 so has come down on the price i see maybe he would drop a little bit more if you haggle a bit?

change of subject a bit, found this cheap 90 for the lad who started the thread. 200tdi t+t

1988 LAND ROVER 90 4C REG DT DIESEL GREY on eBay (end time 07-Oct-10 08:23:44 BST)

Shaun,

Thank you very much for your help. However, I have decided to go or a Disco. Although yes, I loved the idea of a 90 and yes I could get welding done on the cheap etc, I've still got to use it during the week, and I work in a shirt and tie so a tidy Disco is for me. I'm picking it up tomorrow, "95 Met Blue 100k 300Tdi, recent Mot so it's ready to go. I'll put photos on when I have it.

I want to add parts, these including the two large fogs on the front (mounted on the plastic 'nose') running boards and then sump and diff guards.

If uve got any lying around that would be great.

Cheers, H
