First Hippo, with a buttload of faults

Getting very tempted to break my old Rover 45 - as I've already had to rob the clutch hydraulics from it for this lemon.

FWD PG1 gearbox (need to check driveshaft lengths)
late spec L series


From this, instead of 70mph@3000rpm, I'll end up with an effective 90mph@3000rpm :eek: And the drop in gearing should give a nice boost to mpg (I'm used to 50mpg in the R45)

The late spec VP30 pump will be removed, and replaced with a "frankenpump". Which is the body of a Freelander VP37 pump, with a Rover SDi 11mm head - gives 21% more fuel capacity than the freelander stock pump.

Add to that, some Rover SDi injectors, which flow more (swapped my Hippo injectors for them) - and I'm set for a buttload of fuel :)




Whilst I've got the engine out, I may as well do some mild head mods I've been planning, and some insulating spacers I had made quite a while ago




Exhaust spacers are 6mm stainless steel, to try to keep the exhaust manifold hot - whilst the intake is a cement fibre compound, to keep the intake cool :) Will need slightly longer studs to compensate for the extra thickness


To start with, I'll just throw the R45 turbo core, into the Freelander turbine housing (same turbine wheel, better compressor wheel) to gain 10-15Bhp over what the Hippo turbo can muster. But I still have the twin turbo setup in my eyes. Secondary exhaust will simply be straight through the bonnet :D
 
Also, just throwing in the FWD gearbox with massively different ratio, gives me two things:

1) an idea what effective ratio I'd find most suitable

2) an IRD to measure up, to build my stronger RWD PG1, from the freelander PG1 case :)

i believe they changed ratios in the 2002 models onwards ??

actually saw on the net where some freelander owners use a tuning device to alter the speed of the turbo charger , bit over my head that's for sure

been trying to find the small adaptor size for my egr blank as im going to put in a turbo gauge , for info , think I need a 30 psi as I've got a synergy fitted

think the bolt is 10 mm ??

Ratios did indeed change on the later models, but only by a smidge - this is going to be a monster of a change :lol:



TD4 engines use a vnt turbo - completely different kettle of fish compared to the wastegated turbo fitted to the L series (which is most efficient at 19psi - no idea about the TD4 turbo however)

Is that one the facelift or the freelander 2? I have (had) the older and the facelifted F1s, but not auto boxed..

was that a final ratio change in the front and rear differential areas, or a change to 1-4 gears in the manual gearbox, or in te auto boxes....
 
no idea - it's not something I've looked into, as it's not something that applied to my Early little thing :lol:

i believe it was from 2001 , sorry thought it was 2002 , but 2002 was a cosmetic change

Lol, just quickly worked it out.... my gearing change, will be akin to changing from the current 25" diameter tyres, to a whopping 32" diameter :lol:


will they fit with some 5mm spacers? :p
 
I have a 3 door one of these (gold to) the back door has been nothing but problems the widow ripped out its wires stopping you from using the hole thing. The plastic handle can't manage the weight of the door and snaps off, nothing a roofing bolt didn't fix tho

Naah, this thing is purely a mile muncher - did my first decent amount of mileage this weeked (Sheffield to Norfolk) and it returned around 40mpg, the new radiator didn't spill a drop, and one of the comfiest cars I've owned :D

Ordering new clutch hydraulics on Friday, and hopefully fitting SDi injectors one evening this week.

Going to try to have a quick go at the rover 45, to relieve it of it's higher spec turbo (more efficient design compressor wheel) and modify the spare hippo exhaust manifold to make it fit my twin turbo
 
Freelander's a pretty good package for covering distance in comfort - not a bad package for a lot of reasons really :)

What is it with the L Series as well! You can't call it Marmite - cos you either love it or your 'indifferent' - but when you love 'em they are a bit of a passion :)

Have you hear of an outfit called 'Diesel Powered'? They're on Faceache without the space - 'DieselPowered'. They are into L Series lumps. Posted this great pic of drag racing L Series Rovers. They recon the silver one has slightly more power - but the blue one has a Freelander final drive in the gearbox and wins :)

I don't really tinker with mine - just maintain it - its primary job is the family wagon. But I'm always looking out for a cheapey to play with - put another offer on one last week but didn't get it :(
 
Dieselpowered is a close friend of mine. The turbo (which is held fairly secret, just to annoy certain people) was sat on my bench for a while ;)


The top one, besides turbo and mapping - is totally stock. The fella driving the bottom one has even said, if it was a rolling start, he'd have been decimated by it :lol:
 
I dont know!, look at all the smog coming out of the back of both cars!!

You oil burners have a lot to answer for :)

My 1.8 is super clean with its new cat and O2 sensor. In a drag race situation, it would only ever produce environmentally friendly steam :D

Should be grabbing some pipe from work to make the bonnet exit exhausts - both will potentially have exhaust flappers on too, just for the inevitable rain :lol:

The "primary" exhaust will only be a bonnet exit for a day or two, for ****s and giggles, and for the "Pride of Longbridge" show. I like to breathe, and I think those few days will be enough for me, lol

:D laff on the exhaust flappers...and "Primary exhaust"...:D

May i suggest the new must have oil burner accessory?. It is available in this rather fetching yellow...
