Hello everybody,
as I wrote in the presentation post I just got a 2004 Freelander TD4 with about 175.000km.

The general conditions are fair but today I started doing a few checks and I have a couple of doubts and I would like to have an opinion from those who are more experienced.

1) Front drive shaft

It seems to me that the whole shaft is in good condition, there is no play in the central part and in the two intermediate bearings.

In the attack on the front differential, however, I noticed a bit of play and seeing that the attack on the rear one does not have even a bit of it, I wondered if that is something not normal.

It has a few millimeters of play in all directions, up / down / right / left and a fairly firm "clack" is heard. I made a video to better explain the problem:

https://youtube.com/shorts/MZE--EMebUs

The noises in the video are produced by my hand pushing the shaft close to the differential. In the video you can also see the area of the differential where the shaft is attached is dirty with oil, is it normal?.

2) Joint shaft

They seem to me to be in good condition but I would like to know if I have to grease the joint and in case with witch type of grease?.

3) Engine
Today when I turned it on it seemed to me that it was running on three cylinders, I didn't have time to check but I recorded a video on the fly.

Maybe some of you can tell me "by ear" if it seems like it runs normally or not.

Thanks a lot to those who can / want to give me a feedback.

Cheers!

I am not a FL guru by any means, in you first video, it’s the CV joint that’s clattering it was the same sound on our 322 which use the same/similar joints. The rubber gaiter looks as if it’s split all the way round.
Not sure if you can buy just the joint as they are only held on the shaft with a circlip. But. Check the condition of the splines as on other models the spline can go so a complete shaft maybe the safest way to go.

Oh and they (LR) probably recommended new bolts;), I didnt;).

Can’t help with the rest of your issues but good luck:).

Hi

For the engine, it's start on the button, the idle is stable and it's make a lovely sound.
The engine is moving a bit, the lower mount should be checked or changed.

For the transmission noise, I don't see which part is making noise, you need to turn it to see how much play it has ...

Also you need the check the vcu bearing, and rear diff mount ( to see it the rubber is not cracked ) .
Check 3 uv joint on the propshaft for any play.
Wishbones can rust, there is small holes for water, dirt can go in there.

A little cleaning can be helpfull in the engine bay first ( an old t-shirt can do the job ) ;)
Check all the turbo pipes with your hands to check if there is no holes or cracks.
Check the full fuel line in the engine bay, for any leak or cracks.
