firing order

Hi, one last thought before I hand this problem over to someone else would it be possible for number 1 of the firing order to be at the other end of the distributor ie 180 degrees from where I think no1 to be,if someone has fitted a new distibutor and not set it up properly, one last idea in desperation
thanks Ian

well in theory it could be in any position.
If it was me id line up the timing marks then look at where the rotor arm is and work from there.

take no 1 plug out, stick a metal rod in and rest it on top of piston, rotate engine until you can feel tdc, just to check the timing marks cos sometimes they are off. then you will know exactly where n1 is on your dizzy cos the rotor will point to it.

ideally set it up right so that no1 is on the drivers side of the front clip.

cheers

Or the rotor could be pointing 180 degrees from number 1. Don't forget that the piston is at TDC twice in a stroke cycle:D

Hi Ian,

Distance diagnosis is a bit hit and miss but if the engine was running before, we should be able to get to the bottom of the problem sooner or later. (or advise you phone a mobile mechanic):D

You have found your number 1 according to the timing mark on the pully. The fact that it is not where the diagram shows it ought to be shows that whoever put the distributor in last was not aware of the convention but this is only a minor issue. However, as it is in the wrong place, you can only assume that it is either 1 or 1 is directly opposite. Assuming that the rotor is fitted correctly (there is a locating lug on the shaft) and assuming you have tested for spark, with the leads fitted in the correct order, you should have ignition from one starting point or the other.

What make are the leads, cap and rotor?

Cheers

Chris
