Did some thinking about my disco today, had a look at some D2s was contemplating the idea of breaking/selling mine and buying a D2, but i don't like all the electronics that can go wrong on D2s and the air bag suspension etc. when i was getting my haircut today had the disco parked outside and realised how much i like it! so I'm gonna start getting parts and garage prepared and start the rebuild in a month or so, basically I'm just warning you all that I'm going to be begging for help and most likely asking what may be stupid questions :) i already have a few i mind :) hoping to take lots of pics and hoping i can use all of your knowledge

you could by two more discos for the price of megasquirt :p

Good on ya for the re-build, its just the engine you are talking about is it?

Yeah just the engine, rest of it is relatively solid. Any one had experience of the John craddocks rebuild kit? or would it be better to buy the parts from RPI?

Can't find a rebuild kit on Cradocks website but the price of their cam HERE would suggest Britpart??

V8 Tuner.co.uk get good feedback on the V8 owners forum.

If you are serious about Megasquirt then it may be worth fitting the trigger wheel while you have the crank pulley off

Yep the only thing I was going to suggest was trigger wheel but tbh it's dead easy and you'll need the rest of the kit anyway to set it up so no I wouldn't bother, it's all retrofit so you don't need to take any backward steps :)

Personally I wouldn't go near a kit.

Until you strip it down and decide what you need to do to it / want to do to it you won't know what you'll need and I'd pretty much guarantee that you'll end up with a pile of bits from a kit that you won't use. It's pretty unlikely for instance that you'll need new valves - most machine shops will just grind the seats and match grind the old valves. Might you want to go for bigger valves. If you're going for composite gaskets on the rebuild the tin gaskets will be wasted. The Rimmer kit seems to include a set of liners - if you're not doing the machining yourself, the machine shop will recommend and probably insist on supplying from a known source the liners that they are going to fit and if you're going to that trouble are you going to top hat liner the block ? - if none of the above you won't be needing them. Equally, if you're not relining, you may well rebore to 0.020" over so the pistons will be scrap. Will the bores be worn so that you need to reliner or overbore - if not a new set of rings would do you. The crank - regrind or polish. Until you know which, you don't know what bearing shells you need..... etc etc.

The other concern I'd have about any kit is the fact that you don't know where the parts have come from. Rockers and shafts are an absolute nightmare to source at the moment for instance - it took me 18 months to find a source that I felt I could trust and I was lucky that I found original items still boxed - there is a huge amount of rubbish out there at the moment that I wouldn't let near an engine that I was building and one problem part might have horrible consequences for the rest.

Personally I would get it out, strip it down and then take it all to a machine shop. They will acid dip it which will clean it far better than you can however careful you are and then measure it all up and tell you exactly what you need to do, what you probably ought to do and what you could do if money weren't an issue. You'll then be able to make some decisions.

If you haven't already I'd get Des Hammill's book 'How to power tune a rover V8' (I think). I don't think its the bible that some do - I think it is now a little out dated and it's much more directed at the race engine guys but I found it gave me a good list of issues to think long and hard about before starting the build.

HTH
