I haven't even got an FL yet, although it's looking like I will have one in the next couple of weeks, but what is it about them that makes people (esp garage mechanics) laugh so heartily? Ok, so I've read about a fair few problems on these type of forums, such as clutch, diffs, transmission, electrics and the petrol engines blowing, but surely ANY other car is going to have it's own specific faults...so why does the FL have such a bad rep - I read somewhere it was the best selling 4x4 in Europe for 5 years!

seriously if you must buy a td4 the petrol ones are horrendous

LZ is not the place to be sensitive about Hippos :) You will find both passionate advocates of FLs - ready to shout their praises and boast about their capabilities and also vociferous detractors :p

There seems to be a number of Landy owners who for various reasons, want to take a pop. Rarely is it malicious, but it can get a bit much sometimes, especially when you trying to get a straight answer to a straight question.

Dunno why people feel so strongly; all Land Rovers are pretty unreliable it seems and all have their particular weaknesses - whether is rust or dodgy mechanicals. Personally I don't think Hippos were meant to be hardcore off roaders and for some this seems to immediately demote them. I enjoy driving mine on road and greenlanes - would I charge headlong into a bombhole for kicks and giggles - nope; if that's what someone wants, they won't drive a freeby! :D

I'd recommend taking it all with a healthy pinch of salt and filter the :blah: out.

TD4 all day long, not the old model diesel nor a petrol, and certainly not the V6.

Silly things can go wrong but all easily unbolted and fixed. The window in the tailgate is a particular pain, its worked off a cable which breaks and drops the window and there is no way of disabling it as you need the window to go up and down by half an inch every time you open and close the boot..

I too have been the butt of many comments about the freelander, i have a k series, 9 years old 103000 miles and it has only had to be towed home once in all those miles, it is what it is ,but it has served me better than some other cars in the past, but i know i have been lucky, it was a well built one, and just when it might qualify for scrappage scheme and be worth something the scheme will be withdrawn, such is life.
As the old saying goes, over 90% of freelanders built are still on the road, just 10% have completed their journey:D

Why not the V6?

Now this man speaks sense.

as a new landy owner myself...had a xei petrol for 6months after a rash buy...yep it looked and drove fine...

but after reading this forum i got rid!...and have a 3 door TD4...love it!!!....im up in the hills and does all i want it too....even the snow was fun...took it out everyday!...i know its a 'gaylander'....who cares haha...

im hooked now...next step a defender 90....but would still keep a TD4 great for just knockin about in!:D

I have a TD4, its an 03 plate with 50,000 miles. Had it 2 years and so far so good. Not let me down once. i aggree in that the petrol ones aren't so great - A friends parents had one and that needed the head gasket replacing as often as it needed filling up with petrol. they soon got rid! As for its performance, i love driving mine on-road, and off-road it does ok too. They were never build to replace the defender, but mild green lanes it handles fantastically.

I have a TD4 Auto and it plugs mud like a gud 'un :D No issues with clutch slave cylinders either.

Get some decent tyres on and the only thing that slows it down are tractor ruts and deep wading (engine was designed for a car and some electrics are low in the bay) which can spoil the fun. That said, if a Defender or Series was gonna get stuck it would be in a deep puddle and that means a swim in anyones language ;)

TD4 Auto - HSE (lots of extra's ;) )

I had one of the first ones S Reg diesel. Never broke down over three years and took me as far as Turkey. Only problem was the low ground clearance and stupid under-engine "guard" which would sheer its mounting strut if it hit anything. Would have one still but a bit too small for me. Maybe when the Disco finally dies though...
