Another method of testing the switch, which doesn’t involve crawling around at the back of the engine, is to check the continuity at the transmission ECU itself. This is more fiddly but has the advantage that it also tests the integrity of transmission wiring loom at the same time. The relevant pin numbers at the C1835 40-pin connector are

+ve = pin 31 (green wire)
L1 = pin 34 (black wire)
L2 = pin 24 (orange wire)
L3 = pin 14 (purple wire)
L4 = pin 4 (yellow wire)

I know this is an old post for P0705 fault code (TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (PRNDL INPUT)) when I searched whole forum. I'll post my problem here to help others with the same issues in the future...

This morning I got the flashing S&M lights and somehow I lost gears when I was driving up levels in a garage. Even though I was in "Drive", I pressed the accelerator pedal and my Disco started rolling backwards like it was in "Neutral". I rolled backwards to safe spot in the garage, cleared the P0705 code for the automatic transmission with my Nanocom and kept on driving like nothing happened.
My battery connections all good and I never had that fault code before. Weird...

From reading this thread (Thanks bemble!!!) I'm thinking my troubles are related to my xyz switch. I've been meaning to disassemble my switch and give it a good internal cleaning and reseal. I might have to make that a priority if I get more of the P0705 fault codes.

Hi Guys, as a recent member - but frequent reader of your forum, I very much appreciate all your advice and experience shared. I too have the Trans Prog Fail message, accompanied by P0705 which is persistent to the extent that I can no longer move the car. Although i dont have much auto electronic/engineering experience I am an engineer so ought to be able to diagnose/trace faults/follow instructions etc. I’m hampered by working away in Netherlands, and while I brought a selection of tools - I dont quite have everything I would want, and certainly no ramps. I guess I thought the easiest way to test the switch continuity would be at the ECU plugs, but I find my meter prongs too fat to be useful. So onto the harness plug - yes I can just about reach it, but couldn’t separate the two halves - can anyone tell me (as I couldn’t see) if there is a tab to press, or need a small screw driver to pop in and release? So on to the switch for a visual on internals - now I’m not the skinniest of chaps so getting underneath with enough elbow room to work with is a challenge but cable off, cover plate off and switch released from gearbox - I cant appear to slide the switch off the splined shaft - can anyone tell me if there is a circlip holding it on inside the switch? Anyway snow here too today, so I guess I wont be under it again tonight... Thanks for your tips on the plug release and possibility of circlip inside the switch

I would start a new thread with this problem buddy. It'll get more attention.;)
