Just a quick Question, my 94 3.9 auto has a viscous fan for the rad but I also notice it has two elec fans on the outer face of the rad to. I notice they seem to run along with the viscous fan but really speed up when I use A/C. What are they for ? non of my older rangies had these..are they just for A/c ? If so why do they seem to run all the time ? . Im only noticing this as when you stand next to bonnet with car running it seems to expel an awful lot of hot air ! Is it right to be that hot under the bonnet ? my coolant temp gauge is perfectly norm. Any info would be good cheers Dan.
Also can anyone confirm the location of the transmission oil temp sensor, I think its just under the p/steering resevoir in the pipe going into the rad on the right as you look into the bay..Is that correct ? If I cross the wire will this put the light out permanatly as these sensors are not available anymore.

yep fans are for AC.. because the AC rad partially blocks the main rad It helps to have the ac fans running anorl Me disco has AC but it don't work, & it was getting quite hot when out laning in Wales, tuther week. I put it down to the AC rad blocking the air flow.

they seem to run with ac off because of the airflow from the viscose fan but they are designed to come on proper as soon as a/c is switched on and also if you engine starts to overheat with the a/c off.

Don't know about the 94 wiring, but on later models there is no connection from engine temp to aircon fans. Unless like my DSE one has been rigged.Maybe there are not running with viscous but just windmilling. As i say unless somone has fitted a thermostat in top hose thru a relay to switch them with engine temp. The only thing that can turn them on is the aircon.

Thanks everyone, never thought of that but they are just windmilling off the viscous fan until the a/c goes on .
Only got to sort that oil temp sensor now ,oh and the clonking into reverse and......:)

that sounds right , and it means you havnt got your engine too hot yet either so they are working properly. I have got the clonk too lol!

Sounds like you got lots of crud in there then, guess you'll be needing to get busy with the hose pipe. My V8 doesn't overheat if the rad and A/C condenser are both clear and the fans are working.

The ac fans will come in to assist with engine cooling on my 98 4.6 hse, could be the same for the earlier cars

The 3.9 fans (should!) come on automatically when coolant temp gets to 95deg Celsius irrespective of whether the aircon switch is on or off.

If they are on continuously or don't come on at all for that matter then it is likely the coolant switch activating them is gone faulty.
The switch by the way is independant of the other coolant temp senors and is only for switching the aircon fans.

That's my point the fans don't work. Probably could have made that a bit clearer??

Aahh I see. I hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs - The fan motors have probably seized BUT that shouldn't result in over heating. Would still flush rad and condenser with a hose and get the crud out of there.

Have a look on e-bay get some replacement fans (I did and glad of it) make sure they are the slim line ones 'cause space is tight. Removing the original fan motors is a delicate manouvre with an angle grinder unless you can actually undo the mountings (mine sheared off if I remember well) then attach the new fans with cable ties and splice in to the original wiring (assuming it is working).

Thats what I was trying to say.

We all seem like poor communicators on this topic lol

I thought they were windmilling so they cant be siezed???

none of it works inc demister/heater motors in cab so it's all coming out anway don't need aircon in the UK.

The aircon fans are totally independent of the engine, and are switched by the aircon pressure switch. Unless a circuit has been added to do this, the aircon fans cannot be switched unless the aircon is on, and cannot be switched on by engine temp no matter how hot the engine gets.

they can on a 3.9 classic as mine have :p

As i said in my first post on this subject, i do not know about the wiring on the 3.9 classic. My DSE has a thermostat fitted in the top hose thru a relay to operate the aircon fans to assist the engine cooling whilst towing. Without that rig there is no connection to the engine temp, the aircon fans cannot be switched by the engine temp.
