Fan running all the time and temp gauge drops to zero

Hi all
I wonder if anyone has had this problem before. As i am driving the temp gauge drops to zero and the fan starts running. The only way to stop this is to stop and turn off the engine,wait a few seconds then restart and the temp needle goes back to halfway. This can happen a couple times a day or if i am lucky it does not show up for a few days. Any help would be appreciated ! The car is a freelander mark 1 serengetti 1.8 petrol on a 02 plate.
