Hi, I have a fan noise that continues for about 20 seconds after I switch off the engine. My temperature gauge also dipped into the red when I'm driving. I had a quick chat with my local garage and he suggested a head gasket issue but it doesn't feel like it is a serious problem. Engine is running fine apart from the noise. There has been no leaks or anything else you might get with a major problem. Any suggestions?

Doesn't feel like a serious issue? But the temp gauge goes into the red, seems pretty serious to me.
I think the fan is meant to run on if it's too hot when the engine is turned off.

If it's running the thermostat into the red then the fan will run after the engine has been switched off to cool the engine faster

If its running in the red check that it's not a faulty stat then check for any blockages in the rad or hoses

I only experienced it going into the red the last time I drove it. When I stopped it quickly dropped back to a normal level.

As previously said, check stat, hoses and pump (and coolant level;-) )
But it could be head gasket, especially if it's overheated.

Before you follow any of the 'its ####ed' advice on here get it checked out by someone with the correct equipment. First you want to get a true temperature reading, for all you know the temp sender could be faulty. If the engine is running hot then a block test will want to be done as will an emissions check, possibly a compression test as well dependant on those results.

As for the fans, has it just started happening? Have you just started using your AC? AC fans will continue to run for a few moments afterwards as the AC systems shuts down and the systems settles out, it could be these fans.

Basically get it to someone with the correct gear, you can't go by an online diagnosis as without seeing the vehicle and checking the right things its impossible to say
