get it really warm, take the cap of the expansion tank and rev it for a few minutes - you need to make sure the stat has opened to be sure all the air is gone, you might notice the level in the expansion tank has dropped when you've done this - then top it up to the correct level

am sure others will have their own way of winding the system, shame gripe water dunt work

Do you go off roading much? If you do the rad could be clarted up with ****e an causing it to get hotter than normal, try hosing it out don't pressure wash it or you could end up having to get a new radiator.

No I've only ever been off roading once, and its been flushed twice since then and has maintained a steady temperature for months and months. The rad looks almost new.

Where abouts is the thermostat located?

So when its hot, take cap off (pressure is released) and then rev it with the cap off? Should I see bubbles etc?

make sure you've got a thick glove on when you open the cap and don't have your face/ bare skin anywhere near the cap when you remove it. I've seen a rad cap blown 20' into the air after it was opened under pressure. and the fountain of scalding water that came out missed him by a fraction of an inch.

dunt do it cus when they blow they blow,i had one go on me ona forklift at work a coupla years back well the header tank blew off, water shot from under the bonnet and hit the head guard and came back down on me,was well burnt,ya seen mondos blister imagine that 3-4 times worse from ya wrist to ya elbow,up one side of ya face and ya shoulder, not nice pullin ya pillow of ya face every mornin for a month along with a bit of burnt skin and the looks ya get from other folk will **** ya off

I've taken the cap of plenty of times with the engine running, even when hot. I do it slowly enough to allow the pressure to escape down the rubber tube, thus missing me! I will do it though.

and seeing as you say that the top hose is hot and the bottom one os cold that's a good indication that the rad is actually doing something

if you follow the top hose off your rad back to the engine the stat sits within that housing

so if I fit a higher temp thermostat, my temp gauge should show the engine running hotter than usual? It currently sits at half way, and moves just above, but it only ever used to be between 1 quarter and half way. Would that mean it could raise up to almost red with a new one?

dunt be daft pos....the gauge is only an indicator, not a thermometer. the thermostat is pretty accurate......ideal temp is normally between 78 to 82deg c

Yes but surely if it has a higher temperature thermostat, the engine will run hotter and the temp gauge will be higher!?

yip, it will, but not by much, and not anywhere near the red zone. why'nt yu fit a proper temp gauge then yu kin see exactly where ya runnin at. mine runs a good 4mm below halfway, but i have others that run above and they all got the same thermostat
