I had an overheating problem with my Series II TD5 Discovery couple of weeks ago. Turns out there was a leaking problem due to tired clamps around the hoses connected to engine, radiator etc. Well that is what I thought 2 repairs done now with a total of 3 clamps being replaced. One leak I had seen myself and was clearly coming from around one of the replaced clamps. This morning after the second set of clamps was replaced: again coolant leakage. It seems only to occur when the engine is cold not when driving. What to do? Could it be more clamps leaking or something major. It has almost 201k kms on the clock so I am thinking maybe time to trade it in or sell it. But I love it too much .
Well I identified the third leak which was a clamp again this time the small hose going from the radiator to the reservoir visible on top when you open the hood, I think this is part of a safety system in case of too much pressure? Anyway, I put it in place again and tightened it. So far no leak. However I start to wonder now whether these leaks are not caused by a different problem that results in pressure build up resulting in leaks at weak spots in the cooling circuit: old clamps and hoses. The second fan (the one in front and in front of the radiator I believe) that normally only kicks in above a certain temperature through a clutch mechanism is always on also when the engine is cold. I noticed this today when driving with the window open. So question I have: could there be a block in the system due to dirt or because the clutch is broken triggering the second fan to go on constantly without reaching a certain temperature ? Since I repaired the last leak I also noticed after an off the road climbing drive the fluid in the reservoir is high not like usual lower because of pressure build up in the system. Maybe I am talking nonsense I am not a mechanic but a biotech scientist so you can be brutal. Also thermostat and sensor were replaced the first time as well as pressure test was done. Engine performs as always and no steam in exhaust and no visible foam in oil. Any advice would be much appreciated.
