It seems that everywhere I go, there's a tree blocking the way. I guess the harsh weather has been enough to bring them down. Has anyone else been having this prob recently?

I've thought about buying a chainsaw but I'm not sure if that's a good idea and I've no idea what sort of chainsaw would be needed for this type of work. There's many petrol versions designed for chopping up small logs etc, while others are designed for chopping down huge trees. The latter seems to have a much higher price tag too. Is it worth looking into?

I just carry a bow saw, takes a bit longer, if its too big leave it, and you not got any safety things to worry about, and a dam site cheaper.

But saying that dont find many if not any of they lanes we do blocked, as they are still public roads that the council are bound by law to keep open as I understand it, so if its blocked jsut let then know.

You can't use a Chainsaw on a public byway without a licence. Stick to a bowsaw and you're fine. A Byway open to all traffic must be maintained by the Council at 3.00m width, so it's legal to trim trees that infringe on that.

true but correct pruneing technicues need to be aplied.

it is easy to kill a tree then in 3years time its a dangerous dead stick falling over in the lane.

for those of you that require to prune please pm me for advice on legality and technique.:)

use of a chainsaw in a public place without a licence can result in prosecution for and or damage or causing a nuisance in a public place with an offensive weapon.

get a bow saw..

If you 'clear' a route using a bow saw are you also permitted to remove the obstruction completly to help maintain the clear route (i.e. put the logs in the back of the truck and take them home) or is that then theft?

Thanks for the replies. I've bought myself a nice 24" bow saw but unfortunately I would be there all day if I tried to remove the tree I was referring to. I did go and have a go but I soon realised that it was too much of a job!

drag it out if the way if its blocking you, it doesn't take rocket science to move a tree to the side

This tree easily weighed in excess of 10t! It was on a steep hill, surfaced with stones. Oh, and there was a steep drop on one side, waiting for me to do screw up!

As said ^^^^^ that isnt always possible. When laning, the leading vehicle may not have awinch, it may not be possible to bring a vehicle with a winch past others. Sometimes the only option is someone with the correct tools coming to the front to try and remove the obstacle peacemeal. i know of several occasions when moving the obstruction in one piece was physically impossible.

ok then Rich so you have cut into the trunk and then left it?

Yeah, just to test out my saw more than anything, I knew it was gonna be too much of a job as soon as I saw it again. (with my eyes that is)

Tbh though it was so big that you'd need a magnifying glass to see my cut. It's just a graze if you like!

I reported it on http://www.fixmystreet.com/ so hopefully they will get their ass in gear and send someone to move it so that I can be reunited once again with my favourite lane!

spank you..:eek::eek:

I would expect that is now ring barked.in a few years it may die.

this is exactly the sort of tree cutting that has to stop.

What are you on about? We're talking about a fallen tree here that is laying completely on its side. It's destined to be cut up. I'm the type of guy who goes round putting palm trees in the ground, so no way would I cause unnecessary harm to a tree!

Cutting into a tree is NOT Ring barking it. BoB would know that - it needs a complete ring of bark and the immediately underlying living tissues to be removed and a single saw cut cannot do that. Is he trying to stir it up?
