Hi

Bought an l322 with 82k on clock..Going good for couple weeks, then select neutral came up and lost all gears. After a while it was ok. Then it happened again, took off transfer box motor, cleaned brushes and it seemed to be running ok when hooked up to battery. Tonight my battery was flat, jumped car, then transsafe message came up, no gears and grinding from gearbox. Shut it off. Left it an hour and was ok again. Any ideas?

It's the battery causing those problems, if it's not tip top then the tranny box doesn't like it, mine throws a low voltage code if I work on the car with the doors open and lights on for too long... check battery and alternator, should get around 14.4volts with everything on...

As above...Range Rovers detest anything other than tip-top voltage...even a tiny drop in output will cause hassle and errors.

These are complex electronic beasts, and rely heavily on healthy voltage levels....

A change of Gearbox fluid and filter wouldn't go a miss as the condition of the fluid can tell you a lot about the condition of the box....and at 82K miles, if it hasn't been changed before (Land Rover claimed it was filled for life - what a joke!!) it is well due a fluid and filter change!

Called a gearbox specialist. Gearbox is gone. Getting taken down tomorrow to get box reconditioned. £2600 all in..

Hi

These guys are good, they've done loads of them. They come highly recommended. At least I'll have peace of mind for a.few years

you would think a quick check of battery and alternator is a lot cheaper than rip the box out quick, but hay ho its his money:rolleyes:

I'm not paying for it. Anyway its arrived at garage, going to do a diagnostic check today and let me know later. Over the phone he said, with experience of these gearboxes, he said it's likely to be gearbox, but he'll know for sure today.

Well as suspected , gearbox sump full of metal, total failure of torque converter. Metal gone through the pump. So new gearbox.

Presumably it’s a TD6 then? Do you mean a new gearbox or a re-manufactured one? If you’re thinking of keeping the car for any appreciable time (i.e. beyond the replacement transmission's warranty period) you need to find out, assuming it's a remanufactured 'box, if the valve block in it is a new one, or at least has been Sonnaxed, otherwise the chances are you're going to be in the same situation again in a few 10k miles time.
